I'm planning on joining the Navy. While I know that there are a lot of anti-military people here, I also know there are a few who aren't

No and if National Service were ever reinstated I'd be off to Vancouver faster than you could say Desertion of Duty.

It's not that I have anything specific against the miltary, more that it's not what I want to do with my life (spot the hippy backpacker).

I'm not anti-military but I must say that every single marine I've ever crossed paths with is a major asshat. The funny thing is they never think its something wrong with them...its the rest of the world.

I'd considered the military on and off a lot through my last year of high school. It would have been amusing I think. I like being pushed to my limits and beyond, not to mention the discipline you acquire from it. It would have been fun...I really could have made it work but I just never felt really compelled to do it. It would have been more for the experience and for the hell of it than anything else in the end.

Is this a "thinking about it" or a "been there, done that" question? It's ambiguous right now.

Huh. The Coast Guard can't count as military, right? :p

If you're out for fighting for a good cause, joining a military of a country enough big and ballsy is not a good idea - or at least it's very unlikely for a small politically stable western country to take offensive any time soon.
Then again, in the confusion on of WWII, Finnish leaders were actually stupid enough to attack Russia, but hey, WWIII comes around, we're all screwed anyway.
I'll take the changes instead of civilian service, thank you.

But anyway, you just like to see what war's like, won't judge you. Though the inhabitants of which ever country gets or is at the moment getting beaten to shit liberated by US might think differently. Fine, they might tell you it's for their own good, but I don't see dropping a crap load of explosives on them exactly as an act of charity.

Personally, I wouldn't join any force that might require me to take a step into a foreign country. Such thing will never be black and white good thing, with all kinds of flipsides and ulterior motives. No noble knights on white horses in this world...

My Grandad was in the Royal Air Force as bomb disposal, I havn't put too much thought into it but I think if I joined I would follow in his footsteps and join the air force.

It's a flexible term.
The US Coast Guard is military whilst the UK Coast guard is a purely Civilian service. No idea what the Ausy Coast Guard is.

Much like the US Marines are a large stand alone force while the Royal Marines are a tiny force of Navy Commandos.

I have been in the American Navy for four years now.

My suggestion: If you're a gamer, don't join.

Hell, I was stationed in Japan for two years in the heart of Tokyo but because the Navy didn't want Japanese infrastructure on their base, they wouldn't let Japanese fiber optics be installed so we had to settle for the highest bidding American company that offered one of the shittiest DSL connections I'd ever seen (You actually had to re-sign in every three days, it would kick you off whatever you were doing and make you do it over)...

Now I'm in Greece and we don't even HAVE internet here, just a couple wireless hotspots at less than 1 Mbps like this one where we can use Internet, but don't think about Xbox Live or anything

Joining the Army after I finish my summer internship.

I know some guys that join can be major jerks (especially the Marines) but there are a lot of cool people in the military too. I found a surprising number of hardcore gamers in the Army and Navy (I live in a military town).

Most just see it as a job, like any other.

You keep telling yourself that.

No need to be condescending.

Anyways for me, HELL NO. I know there are people out there fighting for us and they keep our country safe but the prospect of going out there and fighting and having the undeniable prospect of me having my body blown apart, headshotted, shrapneled, bombed, riddled with bullets, captured and tortured does not seem appealing to me. I'm thankful there are people out there more gutsy than me who would go and fight but leave me out of war please.

Good thing I have a lot of singleplayer games then...
Word, :D

You'll probably meet quite a few gamers in the military, too... cause when you go to places like the Middle East, or islands like Bahrain or Guam or Crete you only have so many things you can do... get drunk, have sex, and play video games...

Just curious what job are you scoping out in the Navy?

Anyone who says Coast Guard isn't military has either never been in the military or never met someone from the Coast Guard... they get shafted a lot, but they have a boot camp modelled after the Marines, which makes it hard as hell, and I've never met a Coast Guard that wasn't a hardass... they deal with the worst of people (pirates and drug traffickers) in the worst of conditions (the oldest fleet of ships in the world)...

It was light ribbing. No condescension in it.

My plan is to join the SEALs (yes I know I have a snowball's chance in a hothouse) and stick with them for 10 years or so. If I can't get into the SEALs, I was thinking EOD or SWCC. God I love that enlistment bonus. Anyway after 10 years, I'll go to college, get a commission, then maybe go either on a sub or Naval Intelligence.

On the Coast Guard being military. Yes, I believe they are, but it's in the same way that the National Guard is. I talked to a recruiter, and National Guard is part of the Army, and Coast is part of the Navy. I think.

The only way I'd fight is if the UK were invaded, or I trusted the Government enough to send me to places where I believe it is necessary to fight.
