Hello there. I couldn't find a topic on this already here (sorry if there is one that I missed) and I thought I'd get it started.

Last night I downloaded the demo for Mirror's Edge of off Xbox Live, I had no particular interest before and I was blown away by the demo.
Yeah I know First Person isn't new but the way this game does it is just so much more immersive than games I've played before. Its controls are simple enough and allow you to jump from building to building and take on 'The Blues' easily enough. Although it takes some time to get the hang of it, you will be misjudging levels for a while.

Which brings me back to the realism. When you misjudge a ledge in a game you are obviously a little annoyed as you plummet to either a survivable height or fall to your death. In the demo its the latter of these, but the first person perspective of you jumping reaching out for the ledge, missing and hurtling downwards the wind sounding around you and then the crunch and thump of the pavement below is unsettling. At least it was for me. I thought of this not only as added realism but a way to make you want to perfect your gameplay and make sure you don't die.

Combat seems interesting but you don't get much of an opportunity to test it out in the demo. Although I do think the way you grapple and disarm enemies can be a bit irritating. Otherwise it was fun enough, jumping kicks are cool, especially when your kicking a dude off of the building XD

Anyway, I'm quite looking forward to the game now. So what did you think of the demo? Vote up above and comment what you think of the game/concept in general. Also comments on the review would be appreciated =) But just so you know it is a rushed 'review' and based off a demo. Cheers for reading etc.

I download the PS3 demo because it came out first. I'll likely buy it on the PS3 since the PS3 version will apparently have exclusive DLC ala GTAIV on the 360.

Anyway, I was pretty interested in this game for a while now and the demo just made me want it more. There are so many cool graphical details, like how the screen gets a bit blurry around the edges when you are going fast. The controls take a bit of time to get used to, but work well once you get the hang of the game. The only thing that I despise is the shitty motion controls (In the PS3 version). Like in all PS3 games that shovel this crap onto us, I just turned them off because I hate how they handle. I kept dying over and over again while trying to use the motion controls to balance on pipes.

However, I won't be buying Mirror's Edge quite yet...Too many other games I want a bit more, you know?

But yes, the demo earned Mirror's Edge a spot on my "To buy at some point" list...I'll probably pick it up sometime early next year, when things calm down a bit in terms of game releases.

There actually is a thread about Mirrors Edge, but anyhow.
The demo is absolutely great. I wasn't hyped before the demo, but when I tried it, it was just really great fun and now I'm in the hype train :D

Only thing that bothers me is disarming enemies 'cause it doesn't seem to work well, but the jumping system is great. When you play it, it feels like you'r really in the game.
Gonna buy it thats for sure.

To Raven28256: Yeah thats one reason I never wanted to get a PS3, everyone says the motion controls don't work well on 90% of the games. Plus its way too expensive for me.

And yeah I probably won't buy it straight away but its definately on my list for 'games i have to get at some point'.

To Bocca: Yeah I felt exactly the same about both the disarming and the jumping. Disarming is really hard on the harder difficulties and often doesn't work even when you time it right. But the jumping is really fun XD especially if you turn off the Runner Vision.

I haven't gotten a chance to download the demo, seeing as how my ISP requires me to log in on a webpage before I can connect to the internet, but I plan to try this at some point.

The good thing is that in most games you can just turn them off. However, it ruins some games.

Example: SOCOM Confrontation. The entire cover system is based around the motion controls, and quite frankly, they are a pain in the ass. It is easier to just not use them and be more cautious when moving around corners; and be quick to get back around a corner when taking heavy fire.

Really, I wish Sony would have never included this terrible gimmick in the PS3, but as recent reports show, Sony is sticking to it. Just leave the motion stuff to the Wii, where it works well. On the PS3, 85% of games don't even use motion controls, 10% just toss them in as a gimmick you see a handful of times, and the 5% that build an entire game around them are just terrible and much better when you turn the motion controls off.

But anyway, I'm starting to ramble off-topic, so I'll stop now.

WAY TOO SHORT though... But I guess it leaves the game to be desired more so I can get more of the same XP as in the demo...

EDIT: Please check out my Mirror's Edge thread if you want to discuss the ups and downs of the game

It's better to give developers a choice then none at all. If you can turn off the motion controls for most of them like you said then what's the problem? It gives developers some freedom to work with, doesn't matter if it's useless or implemented properly. And the Wii has just as bad games that use the motion control horrible, if not more because it's the center of it and if you're not going to put motion control in a Wii game you might as well put it on another system.

But on to the On-topic, I was pleasantly surprised by the Mirror's Edge Demo. I was worried they were going to screw up the controls but it was relatively easy to work with with some wonkiness with the combat for me, but overall I loved it.

The game was awesome, and was blown away as well. I will be buying it once it comes out. Runner vision was a amazing thing as well. Prevented many deaths.
