I'm a noob and this topic has probably already been touched upon, but I was wondering where everyone stood with MK vs DC, now that we have (a) all the details about who's in it (so far), ((b)) news that there WILL be fatalities, despite some people still swearing there aren't, and ((c)) a good idea of what it'll play like thru various hands-on reports.

Myself, I'm a bit of a DC fanboy, so I'm stoked for this and DC Universe Online. I haven't really touched MK since the Dreamcast era, but the addition of some of my favorite characters has actually gotten me interested (as well as gotten me to dig out my old MK soundtrack).

Yes, this has been done before, but it's not such a big deal. At least, I don't think so.

I think it looks like great fun. I already enjoy the Mortal Kombat series. The way I see it, if you mix in some of the DCU's greatest characters, it can only improve. Plus, Shazam's in it, and he's my favorite superhero. I pretty much gotta play it, if only to see how he's handled.

Also, Joker's fatality is great.

Mortal Kombat has never been good and DC really only has Batman and the Joker. So I don't even think the premise is that great
Dc was usually much better at creating super villains rather than heroes in my opinion

No offense intended here, but that's basically the definition of being a tool.

MK vs DC is basically just a bad attempt at getting some extra sales for a dying series by catering to an audience who doesn't know any better. I can guarantee the game will be crap simply based on the fact that adding some characters from a different franchise doesn't change the fact that Mortal Combat has been going down the shitter since it went 3D. MK Trilogy was the last of the good Mortal Kombat games, and that's if you even liked the series to begin with.

It takes more than a bad series crossover gimmick to save a series. Didn't we learn this with The Flinstones meet the Jetsons?

I was depressed when they announced MK:Arm was the last MK title. Then this came out and I felt ***** slapped. DC makes me sad. Marvel would be better.

No no. Marvel would just be less worse, which is different from "better" in the sense that "better" implies the game might be worth playing, but "Mortal Kombat vs Any Franchise" would be terrible. MK vs Marvel would simply be "less worse" in the sense that Marvel is a little more mainstream, so more people might get drawn-in from the hype of it (and honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if Midway tried going to Marvel first with this idea).

The game trying to re-create the Marvel vs Capcom charm, but forgetting to consider the fact that the developers of MvC actually made a good fighting game. The fact that it was Marvel vs Capcom was good for marketing I'm sure, but beyond that the game could have been about anything because the point was that it was actually a good game. Unlike most crossovers that are based on the idea of trying to save one or more dying franchises, MvC wasn't trying to save anything.

Would you consider Soul Caliber with Star Wars characters the same thing then? Capcom vs. Marvel anyone?

Is this a forthcoming trend....

Actually this is an ancient marketing gimmick that dates at LEAST back to the 80's, possibly even before that. The problem with (most) crossovers though is in the very reason for their existence: To try and save one or more dying franchises. It's a last ditch effort to try and squeeze a couple extra bucks out of gullible consumers' pockets. It sounds good in principle, after-all some companies have done successful crossovers, the problem comes-in though when they make the same mistakes the killed the franchise while making the crossover title. People stopped watching The Jetsons and The Flintstones for a reason, so making a show with BOTH of them isn't going to change anything. Same goes for Mortal Kombat, there's a reason its sales have been going down, and it isn't because they didn't do enough crossovers.

As for Soul Calibur, it was a cute idea when they had the game on 3 different consoles and decided to do one exclusive per, but I'll never look at SC4 as anything other than a terrible marketing gimmick to try and hype-up Force Unleashed. Namco doesn't really need to go hunting for a way to sell more copies of Soul Calibur, that series is still going fairly strong, so it's my guess that they just didn't want to turn-down a phat check from Lucasarts.

And I already explained how Marvel vs Capcom is actually a good game. At no point has Marvel nor Capcom been on the verge of bankruptcy, so you can hardly argue that the game was nothing more than a bad attempt to revive or save some old franchise. It's actually a shame that the main producers of that game retired shortly after MvC2, they knew how to make a good 2D fighter. And at that point, it doesn't really matter which skin you use for the characters.
