I was recently brought into the world of MMO Emulators, private servers if you will, and was blown away. I've noticed quite a rift between developers (a business) and players (a consumer), people like myself who like games how they were, and then changed for some reason or another... Examples being the infamous "updates" for SWG,and anything to do with EQ post-luclin (actually, it was amazing up until luclin was released.

So, hence the poll. What are your thoughts on MMO Emulators, Good, bad, or indifferent?

Wait, MMO emulators, or all emulators?

'cos I don't care about MMOs, but other genres can be quite useful for finding an old game.

The Lineage II ones are pretty popular. I had some friends that PvP'd on them.

Overall I think they're kinda pointless though. Either pay for the professional upkeep, or at least don't cry when the server shuts down for days at a time for no reason.

My experience so far has actually been very positive, very little server downtime, and the admins aren't too tied up. No complaints really, plus donations keep them running smooth as hell.

Ultima Online Roleplaying Freeshards... ROCK.

And i even looked once into a World of Warcraft free server. Well the game was still bad, but they didn't "NEED" you to play like a madman for money, so you could just level up in an nice pace and enjoy the content (yeah...?).

Is there a server that runs Neverwinter Nights from America Online, circa 1992?

Because thats a game I want to play.

I like private servers.
I even hosted a private Maple Story server for a while. (Yes Maplestory. It's fun.)

It was quite fun while it lasted.
Although if the experience rate is too high, they can get rather dull quickly.

I didn't mean the L2 ones specifically. They do seem pretty smoothe though. I just remember the few friends of mine complaining relentlessly when the servers did go down.

I had some friends who did free WoW servers too. Now those ones I can tell you were garbage. They'd go down all the time, the people were generally horrid cheaters, etc.

Basically I've never seen or had a face-to-face discussion with anyone who had much good to say about them (that wasn't just PvP'ing on a 15,000x experience server).

But different strokes for different folks *shrug*.
