After watching the newest EC episode a few ideas popped up in my head, although I've been thinking about this for a few years now. This is mainly concerning how the world could be set up. I've thought of five, but there could be more.
1. Homeworld: This is where the player would build their base/capital. I think AoE:Online has this. This world can't be attacked.
2. Resource World: Only resource/outposts/simple defense buildings can be built here. It is a PvP world, and all players can enter. Natives may also settle in these worlds.
3. Battlegrounds: This world is where most PvP battles will occur. No base building.
4. Quest World: This world would have NPC quests, e.g., destroy the NPC settlement, kill the warlord, etc. This world could also have NPC settlements not associated with a quest. This is an 'instance' world, party's are allowed.
5. Colony World: This is a hybrid of the first 3 worlds. It is a PvP world, all players can enter and all players can be conquered. All buildings can be built. Resources and native NPCs may be present.
There's two ways these 'worlds' could be connected. Either a portal/menu style, or players would actually have to build Airships and physically fly to other worlds. I think the latter would be really cool.
All worlds would be spherical, 361 degrees all around. And all worlds/maps would be a random size, except the Homeworld (which would be the same size for everyone). There would have to be 1000's and 1000's of worlds, and worlds can be destroyed/become wastelands through war/natural disasters. This would mean you'd have to explore deeper into the universe as game time progressed, hence why I included 'Colony Worlds'.
Personally, I'd prefer Age of Empire style graphics, and I think a 'Rise of Nations' style would work really well since that allows for more noticable progression. Players would start off as cavemen and slowly work their way through 10-15+ ages. However, having to go through 5-10 ages before you could build an airship and leave your homeworld would suck. So every Homeworld could have 1 ancient airship buried in the ground. So you could potiently explore the universe as cavemen.
Oh, sweet. I just thought of something else which would be kick-ass. 'Ages/Eras' could actually branch off. So rather than everyone progessing the same, and ending up the same, you could actually choose how you end up. E.g. You're in the Renaissance age, rather than advancing to the 'Early Modern Age' or whatever, let's say you found and ancient artifact and instead you advance to a Steampunk era. And that could potiently alter every single era after that. Then let's say you find a magic artifact that progresses you into a magic wielding steampunk nation, or a water artifact that progresses you into an underwater steampunk nation.
Additionally, units would level up, you'd have heroes, you could find weapons/gear to equip, etc, etc.
Anyways, as you can see I'm rambling and thinking all this up on the spot. So I better stop because I know most people here don't bother reading long rambling posts, let alone reply to them.
Do you like this idea? If so, please expand. Do you have any ideas of your own? Or would you change something in my ideas? Any additional 'worlds/maps'? Got any ideas for eras? Etc, etc.
