one of my online friends recently sent me a link to a new mmo
it was filled with the usual bs, grinding, levelling, boring quests
and it gave me an idea for a better kind of mmo
first off there's a faction system, yes a bit WoW like but hear me out. All players start out good and then through quests get 'good' or 'evil' choices that effect a karma level but if you are too noticeable as being evil the god guys send out assassins against you. these assassins being other people. but if you strike the balance just right for long enough you get approached by an evil cult dedicated to ruining everyone else's day.
when the evil cult approach you they give you tasks like fetch weapon part 13245, which may sound like a boring fetch quest but you have to infiltrate the base and you get optional objectives to complete like kill a certain high level good player. but for every objective you do and all the noise you create makes npc's and players more aware of you. and if they get too aware they call in the cavalry.
secondly levelling up is not handled by experience that you get for any thing from cutting the grass to slicing a dragons neck open and bathing in the fluids that are released. No. instead you get experience for shows of skill like killing a cosmic monstrosity that drains your health bar like chuck green with fucking orange juice without losing any health. okay not as hard as that but you get the point.
also any interaction with other players should be on private chat directly with them rather than forcing everyone in range to listen or ruining their day. seriously I've had trades and shit on rune scape and fucking eve online.
okay I need a potential example, you walk through a crowded city street where everyone around you is good and would gladly stab you in the back to endear you to their masters. you see an agent that you recognise and you pretend to be having a private chat, during which you swap mission info in the form of concealable envelopes. once you are done you walk calmly over to an abandoned car park because you know that if any god character sees you reading the note they will recognise that you are evil. While reading the note you see the details for several side quests in your next mission. you carefully fold up the note and walk back out on to the street. You walk toward the destination of your mission, the city headquarters of the good guys. you walk in and a receptionist asks your name, the good guys have your name on their data base, if the teller sees it she will call the guards and you will be in trouble. you quickly come up with an alter ego for yourself, a low level account you have for just such an occasion. after a few seconds of her glancing at you she is satisfied and lets you in. you immediately go into a deserted hallway and climb into an air vent. you crawl along the vent watching npc's give players missions. then as you watch through a vent you see a secret plan for an upgraded security system. you remember this is a side quest and remotely hack the data to give to your bosses. the terminal you just hacked says 'download complete' your detection bar shoots up a notch and the people in the room stand up and draw guns. they scan around and, seeing that there is no one around rush out to go tell security. you have to think fast, so you hack into the security system and seal the corridor.most are sealed in but one runs free, sprinting down the corridor. you slide through the vent as fast as you can, before dropping in front of him. he begins to turn, but you draw your pistol and shoot him in the chest to disable him.through threats, you learn more about the security system, before slitting his throat for good measure. you now have two problems. 1 the body, if some one finds it they will run to the guards, repeating the process. you stash it in the air duct and prey no-one finds it. 2 the blood stain if someone finds it suspicion will go up, and its a lot harder to deal with. you 'acquire' a key-card to the janitors closet and take the mop and a uniform. an npc comments something about you stooping for enough funds to unlock new stuff. you walk up to the blood patch and wash it up. you climb back into the vent and continue to the objective. you climb out of the vent in a massive room, and right in the centre is the object you have done all this to acquire. a quick scan of the room shows that it is filled with mines and that the glass is alarmed. however, because you hacked into the security system earlier, you just turn all of them off and unlock a secret arsenal. you retrieve the object from its case, and several army's worth of assault rifles and bullets. you storm out of the room brandishing your new death weapons and open fire into the lobby, npc's, players and guards alike scatter, an alarm is raised and you get thirty seconds to escape before the military arrive. but before you get time to focus on that there is the small manner of hundreds of people who want to kill you. you take care of them in a hail of bullets. then the army shows up, your first clue is when a tank smashes down the doorway and hundreds of troops rush in. you throw a flash bang and disappear into the crowd of terrified people.
well that was long, I hope you enjoyed my way of making an mmo better
even though from the way I described it it sounds like a stealth/ action game.
