I love mods, but I try and get ones that flow with the game....like for instance, Oblivion.
There are tons of mods for that game, from extra quests to armor, and etc. but I'm much more likely to add in a well made level or armor than say..umm. ultra hot elf mail armor or, magic spells called "Super Ultra Lazzor Beam Deluxe"
Only a few, namely The Nameless Mod for Deus Ex (a game in itself, and quite excellent too I hasten to add), and The Restored Content Mod for KotOR II, because hey, who wouldn't?
I have a custom HUD for TF2 which I stole a few HUDs and mixed the good parts together.
On WoW I used to have about 20 addons running at once, I used to only turn on the ones needed for what I planned on doing but I kept having to relog as what i plan on doing and what I end up doing are always very different.
Fallout 3 I played through when it first came out and haven't got around to replaying, although I really want to have a run through with mods.
CoD2 all I played was the rifles mod gametype.
And in Worms Armageddon I play Shoppa and WxW a fair bit, which are kind of mods.
I used mods for a couple of games in the past, like Jedi Knight 2 and Red Alert 2, but that's because I went with the ones I thought could improve my experience.
Gee, i'd really want to, but then i browse some mod sites and see how ridiculous and many there are. I end up fucking off and playing the game as it is.
Depends on the game. Usually I will try a few mods, but I have tended to stick to the original game if the mods do not seem to add too much re playability value. The game I have modded the most by far is Fallout 3 with the Total War series being second place.
Other games, generally no. I'm considering redownloading Fallout 3 with Broken Steel (I own online) and then modding it. I have Oblivion but don't really care for it. Otherwise I don't think too many of my games have much in the way of mods available but I could be wrong since I also don't really look.
OH! Just recalled, STALKER: CoP! I found some mods for that game that look good although I'm a bit hesitant to install them as it appears many are for the other STALKER games... but yeah. Word life homie.
empire total war blood and smoke mod is a must, then any number of gameplay mods.
mod games myself even. nothing like creating your own level or items etc.
nba2k all kind of mods texture mods, custom players, on and on.
so yea if there are mods for any game i will look up many and try them out. why would you not exactly? i never met a game the could not benefit from some of the better user created content, gfx mods, gameplay tweaks or overhauls.
Mods, specifically bugfixes and overhauls for game mechanics such as stealth, combat, stealth, the leveling system, stealth, and stealth, were what changed Oblivion from "passable" to "bloody fantastic" for me. Other games tend to get the same loving attention when possible, although generally to a lesser degree.
Sure, I'm stingy with my game purchases most of the time and like to make my games last. Best way to do that is to join in and support the modding communities for the various games I enjoy.
Neverwinter Nights 1 and 2 for example are alright out of the box, with Mask of the Betrayer easily the highpoint of the series from a developer-created standpoint. But with mods, damn... suddenly there are literally hundreds of worlds that open up to you. Fan-made campaigns and stories, many of which are of extremely high quality, that just extend the life of both games well past almost any other rpg to date.
Civilization 4 meanwhile has so damn many mods it's absolutely insane. Hell, playing the default game feels so... primitive now. So basic and simplistic compared to some of the insanely clever, inventive, and ingenious mods that people have created for that game that change the setting as well as the mechanics.
Medieval 2: Total War and the whole Total War series for that matter are also hugely modded experience. Personally I love the medieval setting for the game and so generally stick with that, but there are mods out there of ridiculous quality which change the setting to everything from Warhammer to Lord of the Rings. It's insane. My personal favorite mod is the Stainless Steel mod which effectively takes the default campaign and turns it to 11 with twice as many factions, better AI, more historical events, hundreds of new unit types, larger maps, bigger battles, the whole works. It's damn near a perfect strategy game!
STALKER is another series with some amazing mods. I liked the default campaign, so my favorite mods are the 'Complete' series which essentially act like ultra-mega-super patches to the games, absolutely perfecting the gameplay, crushing any bugs, and drastically improving the games visual quality as well. With this mod installed, STALKER has bar none the best weather effects I've ever seen in a game.
Crysis is also host to one of my recent favorite mods as well: A total conversion of the game into a Mechwarrior experience. Mechwarrior: Living Legends. Still only in beta, but it's already one of the most fun multiplayer games out there and the most entertaining new mech game I've played in years. Visuals are mind-blowing good as well, and the controls feel fluid and reactive. Nothing like strapping into a 100 ton Atlas mech and reaping death across the battlefield!
And those are only some. Don't even get me started on others like Baldur's Gate, Thief, Company of Heroes, Warcraft 3, Morrowind & Oblivion, Dawn of War, Kotor 1 and 2, and the countless other fantastic mods I've played.
Hell, looking over my hard drive right now, the only ones that don't have at least 'some' level of modification done to them are the ones I only bought recently from the STEAM sale. Everything else... Good times!
I play through the vanilla game as it was meant to be played first. Always. Then I go get some mods and have me a grand old time. Really adds to the replayability. Torchlight, Half-Life, and Fallout 3 have all seen probably triple the amount of time I would've spent on them all due to mods...
