At the risk of this fate befalling me as well (for laughs, I'm sure), I must ask...

Ahem! I must ask...

How often does this happen to you in a thread? You go into a subject with a topic that caught your eye for a moment, but then you find that there's a conversation either loosely or maybe not connected at all with the OP's statement, question, subect, etc. Perhaps he hasn't bothered to look back at it and respond, perhaps it was just plain better a side-topic. Whatever. This happen often to you? I feel as though this is a frequent thing at the R&P section.

I've seen it a lot in OT

I see it, want to give my opinion and HARK

My opinion's been said already or there's already sub-arguing within the main argument

That's my cue to skedaddle post-haste :c

This happens to me somewhat often, I'd say. I try to only do it if there's an interesting and slightly related subject to mention and discuss, or if the original subject isn't really something that warrants a thread and I want to try and salvage it before the thread gets smashed by tungsten rods from orbit.

EDIT:

Its the nature of the beast, really. Someone mentions Ponies, or Portal being decent or how Doctor Who sucks and things just fall apart.

Back in the old days I used to go off into massive tangents with Neonbob or Sassafrass and a certain bloated sandwich stealing goat. I guarantee you that when the quotes started flying back then, the original post was long forgotten. Pretty much all of my warnings were for Off Topic posts back in the day. ._.

Ehh. I used to see it a couple times a week for the topic du jour: feminism, Gamergate, hatin' on MovieBob, forum moderation (or more precisely, bitching about moderation), and that perennial favorite, people who don't know how to debate telling everyone else they don't know how to debate.

Now I just close tab.

I don't think those topics are more interesting really. It's more a case of people getting fired up that their pet topic is in the limelight that week. Threads get hijacked because when you're fired up over a thing, everything has to be about that thing.

Yep. This often happens when someone else posts an unpopular opinion or something controversial in the thread and kicks off a big dramatic post-down. Then the original topic is often left in the dust as several people duke it out in forum warfare. I always tend to find them more entertaining than the OP.

What?! How dare you question the pulse-pounding excitement of Escapist threads!

Can we please derail this thread with an argument just to be ironic? ;_;

It would be a double-irony because I was expecting it to happen.
