Poll: Motion Controls vs. Standard Controls

I enjoy motion controllers for the basic Wii games and the PS3 Sports Champions... there's not much immersion to ruin otherwise. However, the other 95% of the time, I'm all about the standard controllers. I've been playing with them long enough that I'm quite adept at them. If someone is just getting in to video games today, I can see the appeal of motion controllers if you are not used to using your thumbs.

The problem is that no developer wants to spend the immense amount of time and money needed to effectively use motion controls. Budgets for video games exceed millions of dollars these days and no company wants to dump that much money on a product which barely a speck of public interest. Motion controls ( for games and interfaces) are going to be perfected by the hobbyists. Look at what computer nerds have done with the Kinect. All kinds of super awesome applications ( beyond just gaming) have been applied and used effectively on the Kinect. BUT, it took them months to do that, and companies just don't have that kin dof time to sputter away like that for one or two cool gimmicks.

I sort of agree.

Your opinion lies very in line with Yahtzee's, that gamers aren't the most active folk and that actions should be quick and easy, we should be able to do things with the flick of a button. While this makes sense in a way, I've always thought the epitome of gaming would come as a sort of Matrix universe, where things feel totally real but they most definitely are not. Complete immersion.

Motion controls try to step into this area, but they hit off the mark. They're only mockeries of actual movements and actions after all, "controls".

I have no idea if the sort of technology will ever come to video games, but I sure hope it does within my lifetime.

I agree that full imersion would be awesome, and motion controls today take steps towards full imersion.(I think the closest is Kinect)But I think we will get there one day but I still believe there will be a large market for traditional controls

for what game? most games would do fine on standard controller, but there will be some where a motion control is good.
like those nintendo party games-those are perfect for a motion control. you are gonna play with a bunch of people who aren't used to a standard control, and will prefer a control where what you do IRL is replicated in the game.
