My point was that the ad is based on racial stereotypes. Racial stereotypes specific to black people. Saying that people wouldn't think it was racist if the line up was made up of white men isn't really a valid observation. If the line up was made up of white men it wouldn't be racist because its not a racial stereotype of white people. If it was an ad based on the concept of white people... I don't know, not being able to dance or something, then it would be racist.
It's not protecting certain groups, it's acknowledging that different groups have to deal with different types of prejudice.

Oh, but I did say everything I needed to say on the matter. I said that I accept that nothing I will say will change your mind. That's the truth of it and I wont bother getting into a huge discussion going nowhere. I have been around the internet for a long time. We disagree, we will both ***** and whine and get more angry with the person we discuss than the matter we discussed. I just choose to skip that part completely because I've had my fun with that in the past, but as I have matured I realize there's better things to do. As a Tyler the Creator fan, it was pretty fucking stupid for Pepsi to associate with him.

Still, I don't think the ad is racist. Let's look at the lineup of black criminals. One of them is another Odd Future member and friend of Tyler's; "Left Brain". According to Tyler, the other three are just friends of the group who showed up, so he decided to include them. He didn't hand pick a bunch of black people to show as criminals in the commercial, he just put a bunch of his friends in there. Also notice one of the cops in the room is black. I find it funny that people miss that detail.

As for the ad as a whole? It's funny in a creepy sort of way. Creepy is Tyler's style most of the time though. He's not a comedian. He can be funny a lot of the time, but he's known way more for just his weird sensibilities and style.

She wasn't beat up because she happened to be a woman, she happened to be a server in the restaurant where something happened. Would it be sexist if it was a male waiter that had been beaten up? It wasnt a WOMAN being beaten up by a goat that was played for laughs, it was a HUMAN being beaten up by goat that was played for laughs.


Dear god at 1 seconds in this video a man is attacked by an antelope and played for laughs! Whoever came up with this commercial is obviously a Misandrist!

That commercial is different because the entire cast is male. The main guy selling the thing, the guy who gets attacked, the random people dancing in the street. It also doesn't give us a detailed look at the injured man and show him sobbing comically. He just gets bumped off screen.

You also ask if the Mt. Dew ad would be sexist if the waiter had been male. I'd say no, and I also don't think it would work if the waiter had been male. The waitress displayed some very stereotypical "battered woman" behaviour which was played for laughs. If it were a man behaving like that it would have been incongruous.

I said the ad is racist, not the creator. Your average person who is exposed to the ad outside the news report isn't going to know the guys in the line up are the creator's friends. Furthermore, being black doesn't magically exempt you from perpetuating racist stereotypes. There are plenty of black people who object to rap music which uses the word "******", even though the people making that music are black themselves.

I think pepsi wanted an advert to appeal to black audiences, and thought they could avoid any risk of being called racists by getting the ad made by a black person. This was destined to fail, because black people aren't good at anything.
For the people about to flag me, that was a joke. Like the ad, it was not very funny. Unlike the ad, it was a racist joke, because it says "black people aren't good at anything". Depicting a black man (even if they are a goat) assaulting a white woman is not racist, it is only racist to claim that black people as a group assault white women as a group.

But OT: I think it's playing off established stereotypes which can be sexist/racist when played straight. They are hardly ever played straight, and in this instance, I cannot imagine what would have to go through someone's mind to think this is serious.

1) If the assailant had been black it wouldn't be racist to have an all black line up. The attacker was a goat however, which changes the context to something even more disgusting.

Finally yes, this would be considered casually racist and sexist. No one is claiming the creator actively hates women and blacks. No one is forming a mob outside Mt. Dew. No one gives a shit. We were shown a questionable ad on the internet and asked whether we considered it to be racist and sexist, and I believe it is. You are the one employing hyperbole.

You're not addressing another point; the fact that the people in the lineup are black people, which indicates that only black people look like animals (since they were the only ones who physically resembled an animal enough to be suspects).
