Ok, so I'm just after watching the latest ZP on E3 2010 and I can't get the notion out of my head that the keyboard is without a doubt the greatest controller known to man.
Yahtzee mentions how controllers should be more about reducing the amount of movement needed to input your desired actions, which is pretty much the whole point of a mouse/keyboard control system. Think about it:
1. All the buttons are positioned closely together so you are rarely far from whatever tool/gun/fridge magnet/magic penguin you need at the time, and can be reconfigured at your lesuire to make it more intuitive.
2. Mouse sensitivity can be increased to the level that you can pinpoint target the head of a casually smoking guard in less time than it takes him to exhale. This makes precision moving and targetting easy, and can be tailored once more to your satisfaction if you find it too unwieldly to move like a ninja ferret on a sugar rush.
Motion controls on the other hand, somethign meant to revolutionise gaming, are fiddly to the point of uselessness which means games have to be designed that are simple enough to not require in depth controls such as Dead Space: Extraction and Mario Kart and all those kinect titles that look like Wii Sports Revised. This is pulling back gaming! Maybe if we scrap all this pretentious nonsense of 'innovation' when it comes to controllers and started making more powerful machines and better games the world will be a better place.
I'd be quite interested to see your views on it, Escapist. Diehard keyboard fans or controllers all the way? Maybe Microsoft or Sony should start thinking about designing a mose/keyboard controller of their own?
