Alright I searched this and couldn't find anything really, so apologies if this is a repeat thread but anyways here goes.

Guys you know the question, when a girl walks into the room and talks to you, what's the first thing you notice? I thought it'd be interesting to put a little twist on that.

When you first hear a new song, what is the thing that you pay attention to the most, is it what the singer's saying? How they're saying it? It could be the chord progression or the melody line, or something else entirely.

What do you guys and girls hear when you first are exposed to a new song?

Usually if it has a good melody. If it does then ill keep listening to see if I like the rest of the song. If I dont like the melody I usually just change the station or shut it off.

If she is annoying.

Anyway as for the real topic I woul say, the general sound of it. But I guess it depends in what I'm listening. If it's something like Bob Dylan I would pay more attention to the lyrics, if it's Iron Maiden I0ll care more for the sound of it.

I listen to how the band sounds in the song. If it sounds good, I'll check out some more of their songs. I have a tendency to like rock, but I won't immediately rule everything else out.

OH! I forgot to put my answer in, silly me.

I usually listen to a combination of the lyrics and the chord progression since it's easier to spot good musicians when you listen to how they compose, or have their music composed for them.

Melody, vocal talent and effects.

Anyone can play a guitar with a bit of fuzz on it, but what about all those little effects? Where would Michael Jackson be without those little 'Woo!'s, or Muse without all those wonky space effects? Also, the melody ought to either be good enough to love the repetition, or not have much repetition in it at all.

I rarely listen to lyrics on the first go, unless they start acting like it's a stereotypical rap song. In which case the song is turned off and burned.

Mainly the beat itself. If it doesn't flow together in harmony, then the song just turns me off.

As an example.

Mostly I listen to how it sounds together, but I pay attention to the chord progression the most.

Then I stop caring about the chord progression when I realize it's the same boring chord progression used in every song. Not that that is a bad thing, but they could at least try to make it sound different.

For awesomeness, that's what I'll seek when it comes to music.

For instance: I fell in love with yume no shima shinen kouen at first hear, because it sounds great in my opinion.

Once i've found a great song,I might check out the artist for others.

Edit: keep in mind that what is grand in my opinion (please don't make a reference to the thread about opinions) is really varied.

It could be little children singing in a lively song with a colorful beat (this was japanese of course) or it could be a good piano section.hell, manheim steamroller is grand for many reasons.what I like tends to be different in many sections, but I have a high interest in foreign music, asian in particular

did you know that if you go on playlist.com you can find an actual recording of hitler yelling "hail" and nazis yelling "hitler" right after him.no joke,It's an actual recording.
