I have had my original XBOX 360 since the Christmas of it's release. It red ringed when the whole red ring issue was going on a few years back and I sent it in to be repaired under warranty for free. Recently, my console red ringed again and being out of warranty now, I have two-four real options.

The first is to send my console in for repair, which I think will cost about AU$150. This will guarantee a working XBOX, but I don't know how long it will last before it needs repairs again.

The second is to buy a new XBOX. This will set me back about AU$400-500, but I will get a new, clean system with new specs (and updated software? I haven't been keeping up tech-wise on them).

The third is to buy a DIY repair kit. They sell them on eBay I believe, not sure of the price though. I am a bit reluctant on this one because I am not that tech savvy with repairs. Building my own PC is fine, but I am not real confident repairing components. I worry about this one because if I do stuff up, Microsoft will not accept it back to repair it, so I will have to buy another and this is just adding my costs of a repair kit to a new console.

My fourth option is to wait for the 720 in 2013 (maybe? If it doesn't get delayed). I primarily play PC, so it wont deprive me of gaming, but I wont be able to play 360 exclusives or play the games I already own.

I'd say buy a new one. But don't buy a new one, buy a refurb or a second hand one from the people that sold their perfectly good 360s off because they wanted a slim. I don't know the state of affairs in Aus, but here you can get an elite refurbished by Game with all the shizz for £100, which is about as much as it would cost to send it off for fixing anyway. Plus the elite doesn't really have the same hardware issues the original did.

Unfortunately, Australia is really bad with trade in and especially trade in consoles. I've seen pre-owned games that cost more than the same game new. If I did buy another, I may aswell buy it new, it'd only be about AU$50 (about 25 pounds) more.
