( <-- is a massive fan of the game)

That all depends, OP.

Are you a massive strategy game player comfortable with tons of new things at once? Are you planning to play more than one campaign?

If you're a strategy pro, or you're only going to beat the game once, jump right into Enemy Within.

If you're not a pro, or you plan to do more than one run of the game, start with Vanilla. Enemy within adds so many new things it's flipping insane, making for a VERY different feel for the game and making a second run in that expansion feel very different from Vanilla.

Also, Normal mode first, preferably with Ironman mode enabled to make you feel really invested in your actions. Jumping right into classic is like going to Fight Club the first night and trying to take on the biggest guy there. You will get your ass handed to you incredibly hard at the very beginning on classic, up to and including total squad wipes.. Normal gives you a very fair chance, although once you get to the endgame and have a squad of super-elite-master-pros it kinda becomes a bit easy. XD

Like many have already said, I'd start with Enemy Within and no other mods, like I did. You should still try out Long War afterwards if you enjoyed the vanilla game.

Thanks for all your responses.

I've decided to go with EW, mostly because it'll be awhile before I get around to playing it again once I'm done. The idea of it having a fuller game experience also appeals to me.

And apparently EW has Mechs or something like that, which is hard to resist.

Anyway, I look forward to diving into it soon.
