So I have an idea for an MMO set in a world kind of like Brutal Legend. The way Its set up in my head shares a lot in common with WoW's style, but I still think it would work.

You have 2 warring factions composed of different music genres (races in WoW).
-Country, Pop, Rap, Hip-hop, Emo, and Screamo for one side
-Heavy Metal, Black Metal, Alternative Rock, Hard Rock, Classic Rock, and Punk for the other
Each Genre will also have a select leader

Each genre has roles (classes) you can chose from:
-Rhythm Guitarist (dps/support)
-Lead Guitarist(dps)
-Drummer (tank/support/dps)
-Bassist (tank/support/dps)
-Vocalist (support/dps)
-Roadie (support/dps)

Support: abilities that heal, buff, and generally aid the party
Tank: abilities to prevent damage, hold attention, and high defense
DPS: abilities that deal damage

So my question: Does this sound like a viable MMO if done correctly?

You lost me at Brutal Legend. However I could see it working for some.

i think that would be cool, possibly have more than 2 factions. it would be cool if there was like a country faction who are all like the beverly hillbillys, a rap/hip-hip faction based on your average gangsta rapper, techno and rave who are more futuristic, and final your rockers

it would be cool if each faction had there own abilities, items and locations. i actually like this, i sounds quite quirky

Sounds like a cool idea. Metal should have an entire faction to itself though. They're so many sub-genres that'd need representing.

How would this music manifest itself in the game? Seems tricky to me, I can't think of anything personally.

Why can't each genre have it's own faction? Because the way they seem to be divvied up now is "Rock and Metal versus some other shit". Last time I checked Hip-Hop and country don't share the same fan-base...

And it might work better in a fashion similar to genre wars, on this very site.

Not large enough geek fanbase
There are millions of great mmo ideas but the only one's that will be produced are the ones the developers think will make the most money.

Hence lotro mmo, starwars mmo, war hammer mmo, Warcraft mmo.

Also, see APB. (all point bulletin is going offline after only a few months of it's release.)

I like the idea, factions are a bit off but musical world could be pretty cool. Not impossible either, well done!
Edit: Gotta consider all the crossover genres(where would ratm fit in), you also neglected ska :/

I think it's cool but here's my MMO idea!

It's about sandwhiches, yes sandwhiches.
You create your race, where you select which kind of bread you want to play.
Then you choose your class (cheesesandwhich, salad sandwhich etc etc).
After that you would play your game! As a sandwhich!
You level up and then you can spend your talent points on thing like extra mayo.
But finally when you ding level 20 (20 layers) then you get to raid! And when you raid you can go into adventures like...
Joe's belly.
The dogs mouth.
Cushion.
Or fermenting under the bed of Joe.
And through all of these raids you can gain raid awards! But if you join them you lose the game. Forever.
But don't fret! If you're not into PVE then you can settle into PVP! Where two sandwhiches fight to the death!

So what do you guys think?

Its a nice stab at it. However look at it in a similar fashion to how many people go to LA to become famous tv/movie stars.

For just about every person who plays an MMO, there is an idea to make the perfect MMO. Not to say this is a bad idea, quite contrary its a surprisingly different idea.

Best bet? Develop it yourself, keep the concept low and market high, so gear not to a Top tier MMO, but more of the Niche facebook type game market.

i hate you, im gonna have to go to subway now

i have a cool idea for an MMO thats simply an MMORTS were you play as a crimelord and you must build up your drug empire by starting off as a guy selling weed on the street you progress to one of the biggest coke and herion importers, low level players can pay higher levels to give them protection. you must also build up a gang and buy cars and ships etc
