Well after getting inspired by this some-what romantic topic, (I shall place a link where I see fit) I began to wonder if any of my fellow escapists spoke a language from a fantasy realm of movie, book or game.

I for one know a bit Quenya, which is the language spoken by the elven folk in Tolkien's "Lord of the rings".

Oh and hears that link before I forget...http://www.escapistmagazine.com/for...forever-my-love-In-Tolkiens-Sindarin-language

No, I know no fantasy language. I only know a few phrases in Klingon, and those are from the series or movies. And it isn't all that romantic I'm afraid, to say "taH pagh taHbe'!"

If I were going to learn another language it would be a real one that I could use, like Spanish, Russian, or Arabic. Why would I waste my time learning something that will get me nowhere?

I know a few words from the ancient language used The Wheel of Time series.
And I can also say a few things in the language used in the Inheritence Cycle, which I think is also called the ancient language.
But I'm probably pronouncing them wrong.

I know there is a site dedicated to teaching people Na'vi... I never understood people whom try to learn mythical languages. They won't get you anywhere in the world, I'd much rather learn Russian, Manderin, or German so I could possibly work for the government.

People are not machines, they do things that interest them.

People learn these things becasue they are interested enough to surround themselves with a community that is also interested enough. Then they all learn it.

I am sure you have a hobby or two.

Also, what is "Spanish Russian?" I am going to assume you intended to put a few commas in there but the button wasn't working on the keyboard.

There I edited it(comma button is a bit sticky).

Isn't the whole point of learning a language to talk to other people, travel, or get a job with it. I hate to say it but you aren't going to run into any elves/dwarves/na'vi/klingons so that rules out talking to people, you can't travel to any of those places to that takes out that, and they aren't about tog et you a job. Now I know people learn these for fun, but after you learn them what are you going to do with the skill you have, sit around and hope someone needs a translator for elven?

You do get to join a fairly exclusive group of people who also speak it. Go to any convention with an understanding of some fantasy language and you have an instant in with anyone who is speaking it. Besides some people don't have the same aspirations as the ones you mentioned.

From Klingon, I know only Gaaarr dak!, and that's from the Simpsons, so I'm not sure how credible source that is.

Also, no, learning real languages is more useful.

Although a huge fan of Tolkien and his work, I've never had a real interest in learning Elvish. I would rather learn a real language like French or Russian.

Daedric... Although, it's more written than spoken.
This.

That, or I used to be very familiar with Ultima's Runic text and Garish as well. Though, those have long fallen by the wayside. I blame there not being a decent Ultima game in damn near 20 years now. Dammit...

I know a few Quenya phrases through watching the films and reading the books, but not enough for proper conversation.

I'd be pretty interested in learning it, partly as a hobby, partly so I can talk about people without them knowing about it, and partly for the novelty.

I want to learn the Norse runes. Not really magical nor mythical but they certainly LOOK magical. Though Odin did know rune magic so I spose there is some magical link.
