So I'm moving out of home and looking at different internet plans. Traditionally one needed a home phone to get internet, but in this day and age what 19 year old uses a home phone anyway? I've been looking at getting Naked ADSL (that is no home phone required) because for the same price I'd pay having the phone I can get an double my monthly usage quota.

My question is however, what is the quality of Naked like (does it tend to drop out/ping more?) and does the speed of regular ADSL2+ differ from Naked ADSL2+. because as much as I want that extra data, speed is more important to me. I do my own research, but I always feel it helpful to get advice from as many sources as possible.

First thing you need to do is check that there are non-Telstra D-SLAM spaces available on your local exchange because if there aren't, it's Bigpondscum or nothing for ADSL2+ (Telstra reserved around 50% of the D-SLAM slots in an exchange for its own use).

You thinking of going with ADAM Internet or have other ISPs started calling their ADSL2/2+ deals without home phone bundling 'naked' as well? ADAM are a pretty good outfit. I was on Naked ADSL 2+ for over 2 years, had zero problems. Speed is unaffected, either way, and to be honest, unless you practically live next to your exchange you'll have a tough time grabbing more than 8Mbps. Australian telecommunications infrastructure is just that crap.

Oh yeah, if you get told that everything is fine and in place but that they can't connect to your line it's because Telstra, cunts that they are, REALLY like codelocking their lines. It's pretty easy to take care of IF you know who to call, which is pretty much no one on their usual helplines. Call the Service/Line Faults number instead. Works a treat. They'll put you in contact with someone who can unlock your line.

I can tell this thread is absolutely gonna make me upset. In the UK (certainly where I live, anyway) we're completely stuck in the "traditional" need a home phone line to get internet, which means I pay monthly for the privilege of having a phone line, and then monthly again for my actual internet connection. I'd totally just get the latter on its own if I could, whether or not the quality was worse.

Lame lame.

Buh? You need a landline regardless if you're going to run ADSL/2/2+ so you still have to pay monthly line rental. Deals like Naked just don't require you to have a telephone account as well... as most companies that are purely ISPs would really prefer not to have to fuck around with more general telecommunications crap.

Actually there is a way where you don't require a landline lease at all, it's called a dry loop.It works the same way as security systems "connected to the central" you don't have a dialtone on the line and can't use it for telephone purposes but it works for DSL internet.ISP's over here that uses that charge a flat 5$ a month for a dry loop, plus the fees for your internet package obviously, but you never have to deal with the phone company, or get a working phone line.

Dry loop rocks :)

Edit : oh and for the OP's question, a dry loop (naked line) is just as fast as a regular line, it is a regular line, just not useable for phone purposes.

Here in Oz the landline rental is the same whether it's regular or naked because the copper network is owned by what used to be the government monopoly and since they've been privatised they're not shy about leveraging it for their own ends (I mentioned how they reserve half of the D-SLAM slots on exchanges exclusively for their broadband services).

So, if you have to have a working phone line no matter what in AUS,what's the point of getting a naked line ?

Just the privilege of choosing a different ISP than your telco ?

Actually I'm going with iinet, (Who I am pretty sure own their own lines) so I don't have to deal with Telstra :D. I already know that I CAN get it, it was just a question of whether to go regular or naked. The other perk of Naked is that for the $90 a month generally I'd get ADSL2+ 200GB monthly usage and phone line. With Naked I get 400GB, a considerable increase.

You don't have to have a working phone line but a naked line will cost you the same for monthly rental on your physical connection to the telecommunications network.

As for why get a naked line, it's convenient and less hassle.

They don't own their own lines. You don't have to deal with Telstra because your ISP deals with them at a wholesale level rather than leaving you to arm wrestle them at the retail level. The 'check for broadband availability in your area' thing is always a dead give away.
