So, I was looking through my games and I noticed an odd little tidbit about some of the sequels. While quite often it is just the name of the origional followed by a number, sometimes they add a little something to the end, so as to really show you this is a new game.

And example of this is Sly 2: Band of Theives as opposed to say, Assassin's Creed 2. Myself, I prefer when there is an additional title added to it because it feels more like a completely new game in that case, instead of a rehash of an old title.

I prefer numbers. Its short, sweet and to the point.

Why not just go the Squenix route and use both at the same time.

Or the classic Street Fighter joke where you just cram another adjective in the title.

Well, I suppose there's something to be said for trying not to sound like a rehash. But then, sequels most often are. If it is a rehash, I don't see anything wrong with being unabashedly so and just adding a number.

If it's a different game that happens to be based in the same world as a previous game, then give it a different title. But otherwise, I just get confused by all the random abbreviations that pop up to describe a sequel title. x_x

numbered. i think its idiotic that games are being made with the same name i.e. wolfenstein, AvP, prince of persia etc.

I think the sequel system should use major and minor version numbers. You could make the major number represent the arc of the series, and then the minor number can be which part of the arc it is. Just a thought. If I did this, I'd put the minor number first, though I don't know why ...

Gameplay's more important, but if the name is heavily reflective of the story, then it should have a name. Snake Eater, Guns of the Patriots, Sons of Liberty, etc

Unfortunately there is no link between titling method and game freshness. I've seen many remakably original game sequels that just use the number method, and many godawful rehashes that have completely different titles altogether.

But personally, I prefer the number method because when you add sub-titles it can start to become quite a mouthful, which can make talking about the game quite laborious. And I downright despise it when there are sub-sub-titles (see #1 & 2 below).

Let's not forgot some of the longest (and most difficult to pronounce) video-game titles:
1)Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. the Soulless Army
2)SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs: Fireteam Bravo 3
3)Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People Episode 5: 8-bit is Enough
4)Mobile Suit Gundam: Gundam vs. Zeta Gundam
5)Leisure Suit Larry 3: Passionate Patti in Pursuit of the Pulsating Pectorals (I'm pretty sure this one was intentionally difficult to pronounce)

EDIT:
6)Super Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting: Anniversary Edition (not a real game, but it sure sounds like one!)

I like a second title, because then you can call it that in conversation. If all 4 Elder Scrolls were just Elder Scrolls n, then we would have no idea what we were talking about.

Subtitles suck. They almost never do anything to improve the game's title, and often make it sound more generic and forgettable. If you don't want to have a number at the end of the title, change the entire title (for instance, Die Hard -> Live Free or Die Hard). I don't know if I've ever seen a video game title where there was something good after the colon.

I see your point, but I don't think it's that hard to remember which is which. On the other hand, when you don't number them it can be quite confusing to try to put them in chronological order, especially if they came out at around the same time.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, or as I like to call it TLOZ: ALTTP.

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood you mean?

Halo 2: Rise of the Arbiter. Halo 3: Hunting Cortana. Devil May Cry 4: New Kid on the Block. Modern Warfare 2: Nuked the Fuck out of That.

I honestly don't care one way or another, the title has little or no meaning for me after the initial title. Sometimes it sounds cool and it's more fun to say, but not often.

That title would be better if it was just "A Link to the Past."

Depends really. I like both method when they're employed correctly.
