I draw from a small pool of names that I use for almost every game. Zaren and Xorena tend to be the most commonly used.

The only exceptions tend to be online flash games (I usually use my own name), and Legend of Zelda games (I almost invariably just use "Link").

I open the 3.0 forgotten realms campaign setting book to page 12 and look for something I like. (I always use Amalith first, but extra characters need unique names too)

I have a number of names I always try and use. For instance:

Lex Talionis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lex_talionis)
Bigorexia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bigorexia)
Dreadfall
Bjorn
Ethics
Warpstorm
Evesor

That pretty much does it.

I use Nattan as a first name, as my reay name is Nathan. In Guild Wars, all my characters have have the same last name (a made up one), and their first names all mean something, either in another language or are references. One of my characters has an Arabic name, another is Gaelic, and yet another is a reference to a character from BattleTech.

I have a few names that I give my character, it changes depending on what is appropriate for the game. Dante Riverside (My D&D paladins name), Zalis, Birar Pierce, Ralon; those are the names I use the most.

I name them after gods of mythology. Greek, Norse, Celtic, what have you.
I name my Pokemon the same way, apart from my Dialga who I named Akatosh after the Dragon God of Time in the elder scrolls.

XD When I restarted my old crystal version, I did that too. I was just thinking of my Oblivon/Fallout characters when I first typed that.

Totodile= Ares
Tyranitar= Kronos
Raikou= Zeus

The names I give my characters aren't Serious Names, but they aren't generally random either. I try to pick names that are appropriate to the characters. I do like seeing other people's character names, though. My favorite one recently was the name of a Hunter's pet in WoW. It's name was "Isavehisbutt."

If I am allowed the characters in the name itself I will often use the names of the heroes from "Dragonlance Heroes of the Lance". The mage is Raistlin, the warrior is usually Tanis or Caramon (depending on the relationship to the mage) ect ect. And Iwill continue to do this until I get my Heroes of the Lance next gen game!!

If it's an established character that you can rename, I just stick with the default (Tidus from Final Fantasy X)

If you're just naming a generic guy it's usually my name.

If it's a custom character it's "Lyther", my first name and last intitial (Tyler H = Lyther).

But in Drawn to Life, I made my character a perfect Naruto, named the village Konoha, made his weapons kunai and shuriken etc. I went all the way with it man.

Depends. In an RPG I'll name based on whatever kind of character I'm making (i.e. I'll name an evil character Dameon, or a big dumb heavy weapons guy Ug). Otherwise I'll just put in my name.

The names i pick will usually be something i've made up

Flears -- Old name. Never used it in years and likely to never use it ever again.
Vianyte -- One i use the most and on the internet as you can see. Getting very bored of it.
Aether -- Used it once. Can't remember the game though.
Aeon -- Haven't used it yet. Waiting for the right game. Might use it for next Zelda if i got it.
Mortery -- Name from a character of some fantasy stories i'm writing. At first it was Montgomery. After a while i thought it sounded lame. Then it was Mortimer, then shortly afterwards to Mortery. I'm very happy with the change.
