Do you feel at all alienated from your country? Do you feel that your country has made so many horrible decisions that you can't believe you're still a part of it, or that your country ignores you?

As an Albertan in Canada, I feel very alienated, have for a long time. I actually had some Ontario resident scream that I was a horrible pile of scum for being affiliated with those nasty oilsands, never mind that the government situated in Ontario taxes the crap out of our oil and are rolling in piles of "dirty money".

You?

I don't think there's anyone in American who hasn't felt alienated over the past couple of decades.

I don't really pay much mind to it.

Sure, i'll check in on what's going on, and then say, "... You've got to be kidding me." or, on chance, "Oh wow, that actually sounds decent.". Other than that, I don't really care, as long as were not pulling out extremes.

I prefer to seclude myself, avoid Alienation and everything else related, but curiosity can get the better of me at points in time, but luckily, nothing mind warping has caught my eye as of late.

I think there's a distinction to be made between nationalism and patriotism. I'm not saying you're the former, you just raised the issue.

Surely a patriot can despise what has happened to, or is happening to, his nation.

I don't feel alienated as a result of my differing nationality (being Irish in England), I feel alienated due to the cultural differences (the main one being that I don't happen to be of the chav persuasion, don't indulge in binge drinking or partake in casual violence).

Apparantly that makes me posh (I don't quite see it myself, I'm not entirely sure if I even qualify for being middle class).

National identity is such an excess.
I'll happily partake in questioning authority, but what mass of land I currently inhabit is of little to no relevance.

Every coutry that was formerly part of USSR is still in very bad shape. Except maybe for Russia, which is in simply bad shape. So no, nothing to be proud of here. I percieve myself more like "citizen of the world" - i'm surely not gonna stay here for the rest of my life, and one of my dreams is to live onboard of a big blimp, being a man not particulary tied to any country.

Sometimes I feel like one of the few sane individuals left. I keep reminding myself that the majority of Americans are silent moderates and (fortunately) they make most of the decisions.

But then something really stupid happens and I become depressed again. Like when some backwoods state decides to make it legal to carry guns in a bar.

Or when my home state decides that I don't deserve a basic civil right.

*sigh* I year Europe is nice

ICES(L)AVE

I can not really explain it, because I do not really understand it. You can try to google it.
In short, I want to know if a crime was committed, why has nobody been charged for committing said crime? And if no crime was committed, why are the british fucking us over?

All I know is that I want my life back.

with the Tea Bagger (Tea Party) movement* going on lately... I am beginning to wonder what the hell is wrong with some people in my country. But overall- I still think that I am being accurately represented by my government and have an outlet to speak my mind.

*seriously, and they expect to be taken seriously

Well as someone watching the only good thing about the healthcare bill being taken out (the public option, seriously you spineless pussy democrats you compromised on a compromise? GTFO) and the teabagger movement, it's kind of embarrassing. So is the fact that we still have the drug war, and gays still can't marry in alot of places.

But I'm meh about actually feeling alienation though, because I was never really a nationalist. A nation is just a piece of ground where you're born. We're all human and we should all do our best to make the WORLD a better place for humanity. I'm not saying I'd trust the UN, but I'm more loyal to individual people and ideals then I am to a piece of land or some government.

If you feel alienated, get some friends who have the same interests. There's no excuse for moaning about how shit everyone is where you live, if you come from a wealthy, cosmopolitan society where mobility is the norm.
But seriously, I feel for people that live in countries where the government is deemed unrepresentative of the masses, like Iran. I've often thought about the people that left places like Germany in the 1930s (like Marlene Dietrich) and then were faced with so much hostility from those that stayed when they returned. That can't be nice.

Hmmm only when I go to really wealthy parts do I feel oddly out of place. Everyone in expensive clothes and cars while I'm in my hoopty dressed like their gardeners

I'm also a resident of the Canadian West, and often feel quite isolated from the East. Then again, I'm okay with that, because in my humble opinion Eastern Canada has been butt-fucking the resources out of the West for decades and decades, and so I have no feeling of generosity towards them. If it wasn't for the Canadian West, the people in the East couldn't be as damn wealthy as they are.

May I ask why you are proud of your country? Personally I can't see any reason to feel that way about my own country.
