Poll: Necro'ing or reposting?

We always get people on most topics with posts like "This thread has been done before (link)". But I personally think it's worse to necro a thread mainly because the people that originally posted the first few posts are going to get lots of replies that they did perhaps months ago. So what are your views?

This was done a while back.

I really hate thread necro, it's like one of those akward social moments where someone goes back to a conversation you just finished, nobody is quite sure of what to do.

Reposts I don't mind, new people come and go and they generate new discussion. So I'm not bothered about it.

Ironically, this thread has been done before.

OT: I find that necro'ing is alright if the thread is important enough or done recently enough. Reposting is alright if the thread isn't too important and was last done a while ago.

I think here on the Escapist most people I've met people prefer if you necro, and I think that's because it helps keeps the forum clear of samey clutter, in theory.

To be honest, I prefer necro-ing as well to reposting a thread, although I won't reprimand people for it since I usually don't notice it. Necro-ing just seems neater, I guess.

It's odd, this site is anal about reposts but fine with necros, whereas our sister site, Warcry, is anal about necros and (to my knowledge) fine with reposts. Whatever.

I personally think both are acceptable in certain circumstances. If there's an identical thread on the front page, a repost is not a good idea, for example.

That post was ironic on purpose, right?

Depends on the thread.

If it's a simple question, poll, or news then I'd rather them necro.
But if it's a large discussion, then making a new thread is best but only if it's more than a few months old.

"Half-Life vs. Halo"; "What is your favorite color?" = necro
"What is your view on the current economic situation?" = new thread

Do you see the difference?

Necroing is worse, because you'd have to sort through several pages of old posts unless you want to risk reposting stuff all the time.
Start a new discussion! Reposting is way better.

If the last post in the thread in question is less than six months old, necro.

However, if you do not have anything to add to the discussion, then don't necro or re-post.

I think thread necromancy is worse, because sometimes I don't notice the original post date, write a reply and almost end up Ninja'ing myself, which would make me look very foolish indeed (I think on one occasion my 'new' post completely contradicted what I had said previously).

Fortunately I haven't actually done it yet, but I have had a few lucky escapes, just managing to catch a glimpse of my avatar and duplicated writings before posting (by the skin of my teeth).

So yeah, down with Fred Necromancy, he's a very silly and sly individual.

if it was done in the last week or so, then necro it

if it was done months to years ago, then repost it

the issue is that there are posts that are very easy to find and most people are too lazy to do a simple search for a week old post, i'm looking at you zombie apocalypse threads
