Its seems no game can do necromancers right, well the games what Ive played. Why doesn't it work or is it just because people don't like playing necromaniacs. Do developers just not care for it?

Not really. Does TF2 need necromancers for instance? Well, maybe; bad example.

Does Madden need nec... another bad example.

Kingdom Hea... Poke... Farmv...

Tetris? Yeah, that's a good one. Does Tetris need necromancers? No, it doesn't.

I strongly suggest you check out Guild Wars [http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Necromancer] and more importantly, Guild Wars 2 [http://www.guildwars2.com/en/the-game/professions/necromancer/]. Best damn Necromancers I've ever had the joy to play.

Then again, I suppose it depends on what you mean by "do necromancers right".

Because Necromancy is an inherently evil trait, and developers seem to have issues with going trying to make a 'real' evil protagonist.

Seriously, Overlord? Overlord II? This is flagrant false advertising. Give me a guy who rips the skulls out of his enemies and then laughs at their corpses while raising them from the ground to serve in his undying empire!

Uh, wow. Sorry, got carried away there.

Nacromancers generally suck in games for a couple reasons. 1. Dead things light on fire very easily. Or should. 2. Dead things are not very powerful. See option 1. 3. Evil things have about a billion weaknesses in the universe like: Water, Fire, holy symbols, praying, the color white, flowers, and kittens. 4. No one wants to admit they're into dead people. ...well except you I guess

I'd rather play a necromancer rather than "a necromancy" :p.

Though it does rather depend on how you define a necromancer to some respects - there's bound to be many, many interpretations.

As ReckzB says, devs don't like to make protagonists too evil, because it can chase people away from the game, or create stupid amounts of controversy.

Diablo 2? Guild Wars? D&D? Those are all pretty well done.

I also feel like if you spec right in Dragon Age you get a pretty decent Necromancer going.

Necromancers were also a great class in Dark Age of Camelot.

Okay you've convinced me that every game can be made better with Necromancy. Yes, even Tetris. I can re-raise previously cleared blocks!

Like deadgrave in Mogworld(Yahtzee's book). He was a good(-ish) necromancer. I'd like to play someone like him.
too bad he died early on....

You didn't have the option: THEY DO get it right!

Warcraft 3 has necromancy. Diablo has necromancy. Dungeons and Dragons has it.

There was a Warhammer novel with a protagonist who became a necromancer out of love for his dead family.

Diablo 2 pretty much nailed it if you ask me. Dark Age of Camelot also had a pretty good grasp for what a Necromance is from what I hear.

Hey, I can get into dead people. I love it! The cold, damp flesh tigh-
Wait, you're talking about something else? Carry on, then.

On topic: I think you really need to convey to us what you mean by "necromancy done right". It's a fairly subjective thing, you see.
I enjoyed playing Diablo II's Necromancer.

Check D&D as well as the new World Of Darkness, on the p&p side of things.

as well as Baldur's Gate series, Neverwinter nights and so forth on the computer side of D&D.

And Diablo 2.

And Guild Wars.

There are plenty of instances where necromancy has been done right. The main problem I find is rather that people don't know how to play necromancers. No thought, no planning, no cunning plots. They just raise an army of zombies/skeletons, and then wonder why they get their hineys kicked (despite the fact that player parties usually do the exact same for NPC necromancers all the time...) And when it comes down to this style of play, going with more traditional evocation (fireballs FTW!111!!!) is far more powerful by design.

I made a self-imposed quest to collect every interesting item connected to necromancy in Oblivion. Then I put that on a table in Frostcrag Spire...

There was not much of interest there...

At least there's necromancy in BF:BC2, because as a Medicromancer you can use the ancient shock paddles of Cerberus to raise your fallen comrades from the dead and have them fight by your side. This evil device also has the power to suck the very life right out of your foes too!

What a nifty item.

I'd like to open this discussion a bit.

Death is not inherently evil. In fact, it is distictly neutral. It does not care about who you are, if you are good, evil, or the goddamn Queen of Sheba. Death will still come for you, no matter what you do or how you kick and scream.

I therefore suggest that necromancy- the magic of death- is also not inherantly evil. It is viewed as evil because it is, yes, fairly gruesome. And also because zombies make a very good army that doesn't question orders, or challenge your moral compass. But that doesn't mean they can't be harnessed to fight for 'good' in the same way.

I recently read a book called 'The Drowning City' in which the protagonist- a necromancer- is not evil. She is cold and seemingly heartless at times, but she is working to protect her country, and to free another from occupation. Admittedly she has a vested intrest in freeing the occupied country in order to protect her own, but she still does it. Garth Nix's Abhorsen series is another example of a 'good aligned' Necromancer protagonist.

The Drowning City is by Amanda Downum, if you're interested.

...sorry, that might count as off-topic, this being in the 'Gaming Discussion' section. I just want to challenge the view that necromancy is inherantly evil, and that's fairly hard to do within the frame of gaming at the moment.

I think the 'evil' bit doesn't come from the death part, but more from the part where the necromancer tears the souls of the dead from their resting place beyond the veil and binds them to an eternity of torment in the world of the living.

D2 necro's owned though. 'Play the game? Nah, i'll just sit here at the start of the level while my army clears it for me...'

I liked the necromancy in guild wars, it was a very valid play option and also pretty good for making money via farming if you can be arsed with that.
But apart from guild wars ive not seen necromancy done well/appear at all in any other game. (although ive never played diablo, i figured i probably wouldnt be able to get into it because its old, so i'll just wait for D3)

Ninja'd. Yeah, the necromancers in Guild Wars are pretty awesome, I love summoning 15 demons to destroy the enemy.
