""As Alice once said, "Curiouser and curiouser." Last week, the fine Canadians at The Electric Playground reported that EA was killing the Need for Speed series. The folks a Joystiq contest this juicy rumor. The site's anonymous source (who should really go by the name "Deep Throttle") said that the series is simply being placed in the hands of Criterion, the folks responsible for the mega-popular Burnout games.
"The source further details the fate of Need for Speed -- he claims that one of the next entries into the series will be developed by the EA-owned Criterion Games, and will likely use the engine of their racing series, Burnout."
The whole thing is making my nose twitch like Ralph Dibny's (I needed to make an Elongated Man joke before the year ended. Sue me.). Joystiq's story sounds far more reasonable. While Need for Speed isn't the brand it used to be, it would be a waste to just throw it away. I'm sure the truth will come out shortly, for now, there's a great mystery at hand!
Do you disagree with me? Is the Need for Speed brand worthless now? If the Criterion rumor is true, do any of you think that the developer can use some of its Burnout magic to restore Need for Speed to its former glory?""
