Basically, you need an operation on your brain. The organ responsible for who you are, how you function. Where your soul is. If it exists.

Would you rather have a human, that can empathise and tell you it will be alright, perform the operation.
Or
A cold, calculating robot. Emotionless and incapable of making a mistake that can finish the operation ten times faster.

Trying to settle a debate between my girlfriend and I

I would like the robot because then I know for definite I am all right since it is incapable of making mistakes.

So long as the robot is literally completely incapable of making mistakes, I'd choose it.

I don't want emotional interference when they're operating or giving me information on what my chances are.

Remember, robots are programmed by humans, so a robot can be programmed to have 2+2=5 and it be right.

Anyway, that being said, I prefer the Human, to everything. Robots never stray from the course. Imagine if Dr. House was a robot, and after his first diagnosis, he just went gun ho and everyone followed it without question. He'd have a horrible death ratio. HUmans can judge, think ahead, and the consequences of it. For example, A robot is programmed to find tumors bad. However, a human may analyze the situation, see the tumor keeping the person alive, and leave ti there, whittling away a bit at a time. The Robot would just cut it all out and maybe kill the human.

I guess I just like the doubts humans have. It causes them to give things a second look, see things they may have missed or do things not par to the course that would save someone.

Robot for the operation itself. Precision is a good thing. But for the consult, of course I'd like to see a real person.

And the soul sort of rests in the solar plexus area, not in the head.
I like to believe otherwise, after all the brain is the headquarters of the body. The soul is only a belief after all.

Robots have steadier hands, and there's no need for advanced AI in medical robots (it would actually be a hindrance), so malevolent sentient robot brain-splattering is impossible.

well if it can't make a mistake, mistakes in this case being potentially fatal, then why would you not pick the robot?

I mean its a brain operation, i'm pretty sure they don't keep you awake for it, so its not like you'd be able to hear those soothing words that the human doctor can give you.

Jesus, who the hell would choose the woefully fallible human?
This is my (hypothetical) BRAIN we are talking about here. It is in charge of everything. I don't want some moderately evolved ape pawing around in there when I can have a capable machine.

Although, it might be an idea to have it observed by a human to avoid any mindless robot slicey slicey if it turns out I have been misdiagnosed. I want the surgical part to be done by the bot, but I want someone to stop it if things go pear-shaped.

This is true. Otherwise, Goku would be holding his hands in front of his forehead for his kamehameha.

Give a me human, doctors are as careful as they are because of any mistake, aside from potential mental and physical damage to the patient, can completely ruin their career.

Question: a human controlling a robot arm would count as what option? Because that's what I'd want. I don't want a human with the possibility of slipping and making me forget my own name. But I wouldn't want a pre-programmed robot either, since I've yet to see a perfect piece of software without any bugs, especially in something so complex.
