Ok, Hear me out.
I want to help re-invent the Racing Genre. So i think that a brand like Need for Speed, or even Gran Turismo, hell or even GRiD needs to jump on this. Use google earth technology, and allow people to race on actual roads, streets, side-streets, back-roads, highways, etc. It could be brought to the major consoles, The PSVita, the 3DS, PC even. You could be able to ping a friend and pick a route, grab a car, and go to it. Virtual racing on actual roads. It could simulate actual weather conditions, Road conditions, you could setup checkpoint races, the game could come with pre-made races setup. It could feature tracks from the ENTIRE world! It could be the penultimate Racing game! Or you could just hop in a car and cruise the Alps. Or you could hop on the nearest highway and look at the surroundings. Maybe they could even incorporate a traffic and Policing system too, where if you and a friend are 'street racing' they can hop in and boom, its an escape event. Granted there are a few possible implications that could make those kind of features non-existent. but still, it could be a good game. Sound off everyone, Good idea? Bad Idea?

So, it's pretty much a racing game but it uses Google Earth. Sounds good for a game, but the implementation would suck balls. Removing that, I'm pretty sure I've seen a similar game a friend of mine played. Can't remember the game, but you could buy houses garages and upgrade them to be able to get more cars. Also, you could travel to other islands (I think it was set in Hawaii - represented by an island, and another island or two). And have different houses and cars there. Pretty realistic weather conditions, too, so if your houseis away from the road, it would be a nightmare to get a car out in the rain - with all the mud and such. Also, he claimed that in multiplayer it was sort of like a MMO only with cars.

People have had this idea for decades at least, it's nothing new.

The game DoPo described is probably Test Drive Unlimited 2 [http://www.testdriveunlimited.com/], I was in the beta and it was OK but had some problems. No idea if they've been rectified yet, might be worth checking out anyway as it'll be very cheap now.

Ninja'd.

And yeah pretty much all the problems with the game have been sorted out. It's well worth the price you can get it for now and I highly recommend it.

Yes, that's the one Test Drive Unlimited. I can't say if it was 1 or 2, as I didn't really care - my friend was just really excited and wanted to show it to me anyway. I saw maybe 10 or 15 minutes of game time and heard some of his explanation. It sounded similar enough to this idea. Only without the Google Maps, of course.

I'm not into racing games at all, but "driving on real roads/tracks" does strike me as a bit too common for them. NFS 4 (or whatever the number of Porshe was) did that, as far as I remember. I have Asphalt5 on my phone and I am almost positive it uses some real life locations as tracks. On account that I recognised the tracks when I played the game for the first time. I know them from some other racing game (I keep thinking Porshe again or maybe Hot Pursuit 2).

It's number 2. The first only had Hawaii. The second has Hawaii and Ibiza. The game isn't based of Google Maps, but it is based on Nasa data I think.

Fuck that game and its "characters".
That is a big problem with the game, but I tend to be able to ignore them. You can turn the voices off and skip cut scenes if you want, but it makes the audio randomly fade out for a few seconds at the start of every race when the announcer would be talking.

Driving on real roads and tracks is pretty much what most games have been doing. I want to race on mars or around the rings of saturn or something. Where the hell is that game?

Wait for the tech to get better I think. I bet you that we will see this game in the next 5
years.Seriously I would love to create a race track covering the entirety of 280, and then driving a Veyron down it.
