Hello my fellow escapists, I would love to buy a new TV. Upon looking at a website, I've noticed QUITE a price fluctuation between a $700 40inch TV and a $550 46 inch TV.

Now it would be orgasmic to get a 46incher for $550, but I just moved out and I want this TV to be the TV I have for the next 3-4 years. Wven it comes to brans names, I've quite happy with Bravia and other names, but I'm not sure to the quality of other TVs. SO! Here please vote in the poll and discuss your favourite TV brands

Also, LCD or LED? Which is better?

My glamorous assistant (aka g/f) who works in Comet (a British tech shop) says that for the sizes you are looking at Sony LED would be the best. However she also urges you to make sure you are not getting to big for the room you are in! You shouldn't be watching from less than 2.5x the size of the screen (e.g., 40" = 100" away!!)

Oh yeah, I've actually got a decent sized living room, so I can actually be quite liberal with the size of the TV. I probably wouldn't get a 50" though (my rents only got a 40"... They'd kill me)

So what's the difference between LCD and LED?

LCD means Liquid Crystal Display. It makes a really nice picture. Most screens now have at least that. LED means Light Emitting Diode. TVs don't come with that. You only see screens made with LEDs at stadiums.

I was actually looking on the bestbuy site and they had a few LED TVs... That's why I asked... I'm curious now...

What are you talking about? Loads of TVs and computer screens and stuff are now beginning to use LEDs (certainly not in the way you would think they do) and by comparison I find that the LED TVs often have the better picture quality.

EDIT:

LED TVs, they use LEDs as a back light, instead of the fluorescent tubes that LCD use.

That's the one you are thinking of. Not even close.

OLEDs are the BEST TV's currently available. They usually come with a price tag fitting their performance however.

I see what it is. The crystals in the LCD TVs are lit by various lamps (cold cathode fluorescent lamps to be precise). The crystals then filter out various colors of light to create the picture. LED TVs are just LCD TVs that are lit by white LEDs rather than the CCFLs. I am not sure what the difference is but I can imagine LED lit LCDs are brighter and use less energy.

LED I also believe are cheaper to run, but I can't remember. My g/f texted me as well telling me to also advise you to get a Samsung. She believes that they are the best for the 40" size, and they are best for use with an XBox 360! She said only get the Sony if you have a PS3, otherwise they are overpriced! (You get the same quality with Samsung, Panasonic and LG)

LED is of course newer, and have different variants. The best being a 'Local Dimming LED', rather than an 'Edge Lit LED'. This gives you the best picture/ viewing angle etc.. If its between Edge and LCD, go for LCD, as its near identical picture, but LCD is cheaper.

You didn't even know what an LED TV was a second ago but now you know that LCDs "brighter and use less energy" that's another falsehood, when it comes down to it LEDs have a much much greater lifespan then the fluorescent tubes and certainly doesn't chew up nearly as much power as the LCD screens do. Did you even read the link? Even mentions that LEDs are Brighter and they also allow for thinner panels. Really look at an LED next to a LCD screen the LED will be thinner have a better power rating and a brighter and better picture quality pretty much all of the time, may be different if you are looking at an LCD from the top end of the price range and an LED from the bottom, but 2 equally priced TVs LED is the better choice every time.

TV's here cost more than a thousand dollars ~_~"
Usually they do here. Black Friday is tomorrow, and since there are going to be MASSIVE sales in the U.S, alot of people will drive down to the U.S. and get stuff for cheap. Canada is therefore forced to counter with a sale of their own

Oh my god don't get Dynex or Insignia. Those are Best Buy store brands. Unless you're prepared for bad quality and the TV breaking after a year... If you want a good quality TV for the money you're dropping, get the Sony.

This I can relate to albeit in an British way i.e the catalogue ordering company Argos did their own brand of tv's called Wharfedale or something. That thing lasted a month before the picture just squinted out of existence.

Got it replaced twice, still the same problem. Decided to hell with it and bought a Bush tv instead and I had that when Resident Evil 4 came out and it's been fine ever since.

I'd go for the Sony one too, sounds like a good investment as I've heard nothing but good reports on their Bravia series of TVs

I have a Sony Bravia. It's absolutely amazing, and is great for gaming with it's 120 Hz. The contrast is also tweaked real nice.
