So, with the year 2012 coming to an end, let's talk resolutions.
Do you have any, and if so, how does that usually work out for you? Or do you think it's silly?

I don't have any myself, nor did I ever have any.. not that I don't have flaws, quite the contrary.
I believe that living life is improving it day by day, even if it is by just a tiny amount.

ÉDIT: the poll question seems to derp. obviously that should say 'New year's resolutions', but I can't to edit it? :|

I dunno how I feel about them in general. I've never before made one. I do need to get into better shape, though, so perhaps this is the year to do that and maybe see if it's a good thing for motivation or whatever.

Can't say I've ever made a resolution for the new year. I guess I just don't find the start of a new year to be all that significant.

They're just a load of bullshit and seem very half hearted and are really just something for people to wave around as a trophy. If I ever want to change my life I don't have to wait until the end of the year just so I can label it a 'New Years Resolution'. Its great that people want to rectify anything they don't like in their life but I've never heard of anyone I know actually going through with anything they have labelled their 'New Years Resolution' for very long.

Eh, the generic fitness/well being resolutions are more of a physical/psychological challange and actually require an effort, though a new years resolution is good in the sense that you have a more accurate scope on your progress. But if you need to change something in your life, then just do it.

Last years resolution was to completely cut out Soft/Energy Drinks from my diet. The year before that was to put my CDs/DVDs back in the original case and not the one i'm replacing.

Look at it this way; have you ever heard anyone in April/May talking about the progress they're making with their New Years Resolutions? Anyone that makes them doesn't seem to even remember what they decided to do a few months later.

And I really don't like the concept of "This is the time to change myself for the better!". Screw that, you can change whenever you damn well want. In my mind, people don't use New Years as an opportunity to change - they use it as an excuse to delay it. "Alright I'll try to quit smoking. Its November now, right? I'll make it one of my New Year's Resolutions! Meaning I get another month to keep doing what I'm doing!", "Well, I failed. I'll try again next year!" -.-

My resolution is to give as much money to charity as I spend on candy. I figured that unless you do volunteer work for some charity or other, you can't really call yourself a kind-hearted human being if you spend more on Reese's cups than on starvation victims or other stuff like that.

I made new years resolutions in my younger years and never stuck to them.

So I made a new years resolution to never make another new years resolution and i'm happy to say i've stuck to that one for the past 14 years.

while i do agree you can change anything about yourself as a person at any time it does help if you set yourself a start date and a time to achieve your goal
i do however take offense to the numerous "i'm gonna stop drinking/smoking/wanking but tonight is new years so fuck that" sort of resolutions

Since my folks have decided to give up on smoking I'm in the middle of doing so by dropping the rolling tobacco and switching to e-cigs for the time being until a few months pass and I'll be off them.

Also for every time I would buy a pouch of tobacco (costing me around £6 every week or two) I'm going to put away the money I would normally spend on it as a sign of the money I will save from it.77

That and to also use my personal treadmill a lot more and eat less sugar foods.

While it seems silly to wait for new year to improve yourself, I don't see much harm in it besides the fact that some people almost surrender to the possibility that it'll be forgotten about by feburary. Trouble is I rarely know what to do. I take failure harsh, even if it's some silly goal I made for myself, so I try to make them realistic. However, there seems little I can do for myself to make things substantially, detectably better for myself. I want a job by this time next year, certainly, but what can I do towards that than I do already? I'd definately want to not be a virgin by this time next year, but...pffft.

If it does happen, it'll be because I lucked out, because I fail in all ways possible to attract women. I can't "spruce myself up" because that's akin to polishing a turd. I can't entice people with my personality, because all I've got going for me is that I'm funny, and I'm certainly not THAT funny. People do say I should be more confident, but what about? I'm twenty one, still a virgin, unemployed, and constantly on the verge of losing what little sanity I have. There comes a point where even having a little faith in yourself could be considering incredible arrogance.

Not saying it couldn't happen...but like I said, if it did, I'd have lucked out. I can't truly do anything for myself to improve my chances.

Let's see, what else...I could try to become fitter, but I don't know how to cook, can't afford (neither in time nor money) to learn, and the gym is a no go zone. Those places are pretty hostile for people who aren't already fit, or at least towards people like me, who are definately not fit.

I could try to be better with money, but that's no different from my constant, ongoing effort to be better with money.

I really have no idea.

Seems that this is most people's thoughts on the matter here, but if you decide there's something you want to do, there's no time like the present.
A few weeks ago I noticed I'd been putting on a bit of weight and so I decided I ought to start exercising every day (actually more for the sake of my fitness rather than my weight as I'm not overweight and haven't been since I was a kid, but making sure that I don't let myself go is one motivation for it). So I just did it. The last few weeks I've been using YouTube exercise videos to get myself jumping about a bit, I've only missed a couple of days. If I'd waited until New Years I'd still be lazing about day in day out.

Putting it off until New Years just gives you more time to talk yourself out of it, or more time to enforce the bad habits that you're already in.

I guess it depends on the person, my mum insists that if she gives herself a date to aim to stop smoking (like the beginning of the next week) it makes it easier to prepare for it and makes it more successful. However, she's tried to stop smoking several dozen times and never succeeds, but I guess she means successful in the sense that she goes the longest without a cigarette?

It's that whole "New Year, New You" thing. I decided to quit smoking two days ago. I'm on patches and I have a ridiculous amount of lollipops in my house. Oh Yeah! Although half the time I just want to punch people in the face, but yeah, its all good. Also if a bunch of people are doing resolutions then its that mentality of help group blah di blah.

For my new year's resolution, I need to choose between drinking more or caring less. I only need to pick one because the other will naturally follow.
