The ps4 should be out in 2 years and looks like it'll still try to stay relevant in an age where gaming tech can't fit into a console (ever seen a hd5870 or gtx580? they aren't getting in a console sized box any time soon, and by the time they can cards 4 times more powerful will be around for £150) by becoming modular with hardware updates every so often (lots of sony patents along those lines).
Essentially, console gaming is teetering on the edge of the unknown. there are only two directions for consoles to go now: become like the wii and embrace the casual entirely or make the last step to becoming a PC by using hardware upgrades to keep the size and cost down.
