Seeing as they have gone from Shogun to Empire, where do you think they will go next?

My guess would be up to the outbreak of WW1, (the zulu war, the boer wars, etc). That said, can they really take the Total War game into the era of mass artillery or machine gun fire without butchering the currant (current?) game?

I think the further forward you go, the harder it will be for them to make a game while still keeping to what the Total War series is about.

I would not be surprised to see some sort of Asian setting or a remake of shogun. And when i say Asian i mean perhaps the Three Kingdoms in China or something like that.

I'm kinda hoping they decide to revisit previous settings or explore new past battlefields. Perhaps a whole game exploring the reign and era of Alexander the Great rather than simply a short online-only expansion? I mean that was one glorious time for warfare and probably the one I most enjoy reading about and playing games in. Or if not that then perhaps Rome 2: Total War? And even though Japanese history isn't my particular arena of choice, I'd still love a Shogun 2: Total War as well.

Going forward however sorta unnerves me. The Napoleonic era was really the last time large formations were ever used in battle because the guns were still too pathetic for much else. Go any further however and the entire battlefield changes so drastically that the Total War series would completely have to re-work their gameplay mechanics for it to work properly.

Although a decent World War 1 strategy game has always been something I'd really, really love to play...

In my opinion, Empire is a butchered game thanks to artillery... I want them to go back to a simpler time, Rome is the best Total War ever.

I'd like them to do Shogun and some Chinese stuff, but more likely is a proper run of the American Civil War.

If Empire is butchered by artillery, Rome is totally chew up by War Dogs. Entire armies of War Dogs. Insanely cheap, really fast, highly deadly and totally bugged because the AI commander can't react to them. Once released the pack doesn't count as a unit, so the AI cannot respond to it and even at an individual unit level the troops will not spread to engage the dogs, getting swarmed and fighting man-to-err... dog I guess. Dogs have no moral, basically never tire and can easily out-run any infantry unit, meaning that retreating foes get slaughtered.

If you go back to Rome any time soon, build an army from a general, two units of heavy infantry or spears (for battering rams and nothing else) and 17 packs of war dogs. It'll crush anything at least until the rise of legionaries and the arrival of elephants on your doorstep.

I've always wanted a good WW1 game but as has been mentioned,

Regardless of what era they do next, the game needs to be bug free before it's shipped and be highly moddable. One of the biggest failures for Empire for me was how modding anything complex in was impossible. The vast majority of my time spent in Medieval 2 is spent playing Stainless Steel and Third Age:Total War. Empire prevents such amazing mods from developing.

There isn't really much room to go forward...

There are two directions the Total War series has been going - Large scale open world campaigns and smaller, more focused campaigns (Kingdoms, Napoleon). The smaller variety has only worked as a spinoff and personally I never really enjoyed them.

From Napoleon to today, I don't see an era that could properly accomodate the Total War paradigm, except maybe 20th century, from start to finish. THAT would be awesome, but they have their work cut out for them.

What I WOULD like to see is a Total War game set in the future, perhaps in Space. There's so much potential there that they can play with and so much room to make something new and original, unconstrained by the demand for historical accuracy. Also, a remake of Rome, only more complex would be most welcome.

Agreed, although I also really enjoy what Creative Assembly did with Empire: Total War. The era is intriguing, and the tactics enough of a departure from the previous games it felt new as opposed to the jump from Rome to Medieval 2, in which the tactics generally stayed the same but only the units and technologies changed.

And for all its flaws I also enjoyed the naval battles. Still needs work, but for a first attempt extremely well done. I look forward to future games refining the mechanic!

Haven't bought Napoleon yet, but it's only a matter of time.

Beserkers where more broken than war dogs. You got an army of beserkers and nothing can stand in your way. Beserkers where just game breakingly fucking mental.
I find it kinda funny how people complain about the bugs and balance issues of the newer Total War games and refer back to Rome as the peak of the series. Beserkers and War Dogs weren't even the worst of it when the game came out, the absolute worst enemies to face were rivers because often entire armies would march, row by row, like some sick dystopian vision, to their deaths beneath those murky waves...

So many soldiers lost.... I'm sorry... I'm gonna need a minute here, the memories!... You understand!

firstly, there was a expansion Alexander Total War, which was released on PC in england at least...

and maybe, but the zulu and boer wars were fought with thousands of people, they might be able to squeeze a last era out of it...

I know, that's why I said 'Perhaps a whole game exploring the reign and era of Alexander the Great rather than simply a short online-only expansion'. You know, give Alexander his own full game like they did for Napoleon. Both brilliant generals, but of the two I'd rather play as Alexander, the man was nigh unbeatable and the enemies he faced many and diverse.

Don't really think Zulu would work, too small of a scale and far too concentrated. After all what sort of units would you have? But Boer wars could work. I doubt it'd ever happen, but it's a possibility.

Most likely in we're going next into asia somwhere between 1200 - 1868. Or maybe some tribal warfare in Africa or Southern America? Or antics again? I don't know. Anything can come next. Maybe the studios abandon the series? Untill WWI melee fights were the solution in battles. So everything before WWI (including (WWI) can be expected.

I'd like an expansion to ETW in the form of a tribute to Sid Meier's Gettysburg (spelling?) loved that game, and enjoy anything about 1860s America in that sense.

yeah, but how many yanks or brits (the main buyers) know about ancient china? the best thing about all the Total Wars is that they were famous enough to be easily recognisable.

I've a feeling we may see another ancient historical era, either China (which I don't think because people are like yay, I totally recognise this central asian campaign map)

or - Arabic. I really think this might be the next big one. The Arabic era is a totally unexplored era.

The most likely however, is a re-do of Rome. It was their most successful title.
