***WARNING!!!!! RANT IMMINENT!!!!!***

Last night I was helping my roommate with a couple of things, and didn't get to bed until 6am. Two hours later I hear some guys outside my apartment with ladders and hammers, doing...something, I don't know what, and I'm sick of it. I've always described myself as a "night owl" (redundant, I know), and I realize that I've always been nocturnal. I was born at 10:45 at night, and I am fed up with living in a society where everyone assumes you wake up at six in the morning, and if you don't, it means you are worth less than those who do. The happiest time in my life was when I had a job that went from 3-11pm.

Anyways, Escapists, do you live during the day, or thrive at night? If you could choose to have everything you needed available at any time of the day, would you enjoy the sunshine or make people wonder if you'll burst into flames if you tried?

The night is a wonderful time, where all is still, and there is no reason to be discontented with yourself.

I love being out at night. It just feels, right.

I do most things during the day and maybe you should stop complaining that people are doing their jobs that inconvenience your preference for sleeping while its bright out.

I fall somewhere in between... I like waking up in the early afternoon, and going to sleep as the sun is rising. That way I get a little sunlight before my 'day' really starts, and I can enjoy the long night.

It's actually been really nice having a boyfriend who works late-night, because I can sit up and talk to him all night.

I'd say nocturnal, but I think anyone who blows a shit because people are doing anything in the daytime need to get with the program. Someone calls you at noon and it wakes you up and pisses you off? cry me a river.. Heck, I only say noon because that's a favor I do to my best friend.. everyone else can take a call at 10am, unless they work at night.

I have DSPS (Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome) so basicly I can't get to sleep before about 1am at the latest and usually wakee up at around 12pm - 3pm depending on when I get to sleep. It makes my life a real pain in the arse. I love the night time. It's peacefull and relaxing but it is just so sociably unexceptable in regards to a lot of everyday life. I hope I get a graveeyard shift job if I don't get the DSPS out of my system.

I'm more nocturnal. I love to just go for walks around the city at night and just enjoy the cool air, the way the sky looks, and things like that. It just has so many things that make me happy that the day time can never give me.

If I could choose I'd be nocturnal, I always prefer to "work" at night...

I voted nocturnal because I love night.
Even though I wake up as soon as a photon strikes my eyelid :(

More nocturnal than diurnal? Am I the only one who finds that term funny? Anyway, I find myself more productive in later morning and the afternoon, but I find myself less productive when night rolls around.

But I love the night more than anything, if I need to go out the lack of vision keeps me on my toes, and I've been pretty much raised in a cold house so the crisp cool night is my kinda thing. Only regret is that I don't have better blinds for when I'm ignoring the urge to rise with the sunrise.

Me? Definitely, deifinitely nocturnal. I can sit at the computer untill 1AM, sometimes 2AM - even if i do not want to. Or i can just sit at my table and draw, does not matter. My father is also like that.

And i agree with the OP... apparently people waking up at 6AM do not understand we can catch them while they're sleeping with ease >:D Eee-hheeee-hee-hee-hee!

Hey, i might have the same thing (slightly less severe, though). Wouldn't be amazing, my mind is far from "model".

I'm nocturnal by default.

It's a pain having to readjust my sleeping pattern so i can wake up at 7am for college, it just doesn't feel natural to me and i'll end up falling asleep at college a lot. When i don't have a schedule my pattern inches back towards being completely nocturnal.

Once i had a really nice few days where i slept at 6pm every day and woke up at 2am. That way i'd have like 6 hours awake before school started, and i'd sleep a few hours after school finished!
It'd be nice if i could maintain that pattern, was my favourite so far.

At the time of posting it's 5am here and i'm still pretty much wide awake, usually start feeling really tired in the next hour or 2.

I'm neither. On days off, I usually go to bed too late at around 1 or 2, but get up early because I hate wasting the day. Usually around 8-9. That's what coffee's for I guess. Too bad I don't sleep much when I don't have days off either.

I don't understand how anyone can sleep past 10:00 or so. Don't you like life!? There's so much you could be doing! I'm always reminded of that Calvin and Hobbes comic where Hobbes is overjoyed when Calvin wakes up and exclaims, "You're awake! Now we can do things again!"

In my opinion I quite like having it [DSPS]. You're still normal with it your just the other way around from everyone else. So when people would normaly go to sleep we would wake up and vice versa. This brings it's own advantages and disadvantages.

Big advantages I can think of is that you could go into night work which I think payes better, and doing all nighters for something is a doddle (you will not believe the amount of history essays I have done in one night, handed in the flowing morning and slept through the rest of the lesson)

Big disadvantages are that no day time social life. I miss going out and mesing around with mates 'cause by the time I get up and out it's already pretty dark. And as mentioned earlier, school. I usually get to sleep at around 3-4am and have to wake up at 7am to get to school. When I get to school I will usually fall asleep (not on purpose but I just basicly faint) till about 1-2pm by that time most lessons are over.

Still luckily I have heard that it mostly occurs with teenage puberty years and that many grow out of it. Which means that Kollega, you and me may grow out of it in a few years as we are nearly the same age, and I know this because I'm stalking you I looked at your profile. Dexiro I don't know about however the chance of having it in adult years are slim.

Now I have to go to bed as it has just hit 5:30am and I have just started to go dreary eyed and sleepy.

I'm both. Basically, no time to sleep. I've learned over the years to get by on two to four hours of sleep a day, six if I'm exceptionally tired. I can stay up for about 50 hours if necessary, sometimes more if I absolutely have to.

Healthy? Not by a long shot, but I don't have a great deal of choice.

I'm all of the above. My sleep schedule gets kicked around more than a paper in a tornado (probably due to late night gaming,) and I'm happy to be awake at any part of the day. Wake up at 5, go for a nice walk while the birds just start singing, wake up at 9 and have a nice lazy morning, wake up at 3 and enjoy the afternoon at it's prime. They're all equally awesome to me.

OP, while I don't think you have much reason to complain about people doing things during daytime, I'd like to see different sleep schedules become more socially acceptable. I feel like it'd make the world a more interesting place.

I'm constantly switching between the two due to hormones fucking up the way I sleep (16 hours awake, 12 asleep, do the math) but up until this year, I've always preferred the night.

See, I live with two brothers, who all wanted to use the computer all the time and we agreed a long time ago that we each get 1 hour long turns (rules have changed nowadays) and being awake at night let me be on for as long as I wanted. It also helped me do my homework for school, since I'm a notorious procrastinator, I would often worry about not getting sleep, so I did it an hour before school.

Now my hormones are screwing around in my body once more, making me tired a lot earlier then usual (around 10 hours) and sleeping for a lo less (around 5 hours) yet I've somehow slipped into a stable cycle that I do not like, due to the fact me and my friend usually play Starcraft at about 2 am and I'm usually too tired to play.

Getting back on-topic, it doesn't matter to me when I'm awake or not. One brother never uses the comp anymore, and the other works 12 hours a day, so I always adjust to the cycle.

I don't think i have it so bad that i miss out on a social life, since most of my friends usually go out during the night if at all. The latest i wake up is 6pm.

I'm not too fussed if i grow out of this, whichever way i go i just want a job i can go to without compromising sleep. I've had it pretty much all my life though and it seems to be getting worse rather than better.
I wouldn't know about it though since i only just found out about it xD

Maybe it would be a shame to see it go, i'm too used to sleeping this way :c
