No, nuclear weapons are the scourge of the world. We are in absolutly no danger from indonsia, why? Because wars aren't just about numbers. Sure indonesia out numbers us 20 to 1 but think. How much food and water do 500,000 people need? The cost of arming them, medical supplies training is massive. Not only that, how are half a million people going to get to Australia? By boat or Plane. The indonesia miliatary has little in the way of a modern navy, Australia produces colins class subs, which will blow most vessels out of the water if they aren't equiped with proper sensors and weapons to combat them. Each boat destroyed is 300 less men our soldiers have to fight, plus hundreds of guns and rations. Also its not just men, they need to ship tanks, weapons, armoured cars and aircraft. By air, we have a somewhat dated air force but Indonesia has almost nothing in the way of modern fighter jets. The transports would be blown out of the sky. Then, once they've landed, theres actually getting to the capitol cities.
How much petrol and diesel would it take to transport 500,000 men and tonnes of food, water and equipment 1000km? Remember from Adelaide to Melbourne is like London to Berlin it's a huge distance for an army to travel. Yes they have roads, but it's still a 10 hour trip by car at least, that's uninterupted between cities. Did I mention aircraft can blow up convoys as well?
Then if they actually manage to get to a city, there's our infantry which is well trained with modern weaponry have, tanks, helicopters and ATVs. The rifle of the Indonesian army is the ak-47, which is powerful and realiable but innaccurate compared to modern weapons. I would guess that the conscript soldiers wouldn't exactly be highly trained.
Indonesia not being an economic powerhouse would be screwed if it actually tried to invade simply due to the cost. The sea and the terrain is against them. They have dated milatary technology and aren't trained to the standard of Australian troops. Also, if they somehow do takeover the UN is obliged to help us. We don't need nuclear weapons to protect ourselves.
