Ok, first some backstory. Several years ago, my dad worked for a company called Rocket Science Games. It was a fairly small company and only put out 5 or so games before it closed down. Their biggest game was called Obsidian, a surreal myst-like adventure game. Now, so far, the only way I'd really heard of the game was from a T-shirt my dad has. However, I just looked at the Wikipedia article for the game and it informed me that while not a commercial success, it has become "a cult classic", and has won several awards. I'm wondering, was it really a classic, or have I really only heard of it because my dad worked on it for a long time?

EDIT: Also, please post if you have something to say.

Never heard of it. Explain why it's considered to be a cult classic. What about it gave it such a status? The story? The gameplay, the characters? there's something there that provides the title and i'd like to know.

Well honestly I don't know, I've never played it. It got great reviews on a bunch of websites. It was basically a very surreal myst (if you can imagine myst but more surreal) about a couple of scientists in like a tower of their subconcious. It had several dozen hours of gameplay and I think it was point-and-click. The only thing I have that says it's a classic is the Wikipedia page, so I'm wondering if my fellow escapists can help me confirm this.

I faintly recall hearing something about it and the screenshots Google's given me look vaguely familiar, but I otherwise have no memory of when or where I might have seen it. Granted, there were a LOT of Myst clones, so maybe I'm confusing it with one of them, or Myst itself.

Also keep in mind that for a lot of Escapists, 1996 was around the time they were learning to walk. Or, like me, were far too busy with Doom II to pay attention to what many of us at the time considered antiquated point-and-clickers.

If you don't mind me asking, what does your dad do now? Does he still make games? And if so, who does he work for?

I recognized the name, vaguely, despite probably not being very sapient during it's release.. Rifling through some old drawers, I found it's disk.

...Though it will most definetely not work, I get a vague sense that I once enjoyed it. Heh.

He still works on games. He's currently working for Global VR, which makes arcade games. It's pretty much ensured at the moment that they won't last much longer, as they've got about 12 people working there..

I don't think anyone was sapient back then...

I played that!

It was on a demo CD that used to come packed in with issues of MacAddict magazine. I LOVED it, even though it was essentially only one puzzle. See, pretty much the only other computer game game I had was Myst, so I've always been a big fan of atmospheric point-and-click puzzle games.

I would so love to be able to play the full version.
