So here's the deal: my buddy Steve is looking into getting a console and some games. He already has a fine gaming PC, so I don't need any smartass remarks about how PC gaming is the only option and all...

Anyways, my personal opinion I that he get the 360. He isn't so sure, which is where you all come in. I'm attempting to formulate a convincing argument here, and he did agree to settle by popular vote. But only one option because of the budget.

Budget is around $500 it seems. He knows he wants a good 2D fighter to start out and he says he doesn't care about having an arcade stick; he'll get one eventually... baby steps here.

Most of our mutual friends own some combination of the Wii and a 360 or PS3, but 360 is definitely the most prevalent console per capita for our group.

So here are the options (he agreed to the following setups, but feel free to post your own ideas of better bundles):

Option #1: Xbox 360
Pro console (or whatever they're calling it nowadays)
Extra controller
Raiden IV (when it comes out)
Blazblue
Buy some spacebucks for some XBLA games ? probably 20 real dollars worth, or 1600 MS pts.

Option #2: PS3
80 GB PS3
Extra controller
Blazblue

Option #3: Wii
Wii
Hori arcade stick or Nyko Wing (possibly 2 Wings)
Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Tatsumoto vs. Capcom (when it comes out)
Samurai Shodown Anthology
Some Wii cash to buy shit on the WiiWare or VC channels

I'm happy with my 360 and would advise you to go with that option, but I'm not exactly an unbiased opinion.

I would say XBox 360. If most of your friends have it it's great.

And XBL Marketplace have loads of 2D fighters. Double Dragon for example.

It's cool, all opinions are biased. Some for different reasons than others, but still all biased.

Not exactly they all have good exclusives which is annoying but I do prefer PC for graphics, control and online play

If it were me, I'd say 360. However, I know nothing about 2-D fighters or which consoles they're best on, so I really have no idea.

Gotta admit, I'm a bit surprised someone hasn't voted PS3 yet. It's times like these that I miss Indigo and his tenaciousness... if only for the debates.

I would say 360 if all his friends have it, mainly because I love stayin up all night playing Battlefield 1943 with a full team of friends. However I loathe 2-D fighters so I wouldn't know witch console is better for it.

If you guys all have 360s I'd say go with that. That way he can get games off you and link up for multiplayer (avoiding paying for live), cheaper all round.

Basically it all runs down to what he wants from his console.

Xbox360 will be pretty much a good all rounder, its got a good variety of multiplayer and singleplayer games and in my opinion is the closest console to your desktop PC. Good if you play games by yourself or with only 2/3 friends.

PS3, i'm afraid my knowledge of this lacks but from what i've gathered its pretty much the same as an xbox with afew gimics thrown in but more expensive.

Wii - Aimed at younger generation and you will feel this as alot of games are dumbed down or loss alot of accomadate for the motion controls. The motion controls are fun but can be frustrating and the games feel abit less because of it i feel. However BRILLIANT console for playing with friends exspecially smash bros brawl, good for parties and popular people who want to entertain 2-8 people. I wouldnt buy a Wii for much single player use as the other consoles are much better than it for that.

My 2 cents.

I'm the only one to vote ps3... apparently because I'm the only one to HAVE a ps3, at least i am in my circle of friends.
all pretty much the same really, depends on what you want, if your going to get blazeblue for each anyway, maybe look at the other things he might like for each?

I would agree with that. However, this is not a good time to get into PC gaming because of the lack of games coming out for it this year. I would say go either retro or 360, or if he is looking into the future then get PS3 just because of The Last Guardian and Heavy Rain.

For this particular case I would say Wii is the worst option, and I'd personally go for Xbox360 (seeing as he probably blew enough on his PC). He has some weird taste in games though.
Weird taste? How so(?), if you don't mind my asking. It's kinda my taste since he doesn't do much console gaming. I asked for his favorite genres and worked w/ that.

He doesn't care about Blu-ray or MGS. But he'd prefer WiFi if possible. Really likes FPSs and older games from when we had grown up (16- and 32 -bit days).
