It seems like the two biggest contenders for the "next big MMO" are Star Wars: The Old Republic and Guild Wars 2. While yes, it's far to early to have enough evidence to know which will be better, I'm curious as to which you all think will be more "innovative." As a Star Wars fan I've been excited about Old Republic since it was first announced, but while Bioware always has top-notch writing, it seems like story-line is where most of the innovation will take place for Old Republic compared with other MMOs. In terms of game-play itself, everything we've seen of GW2 so far seems quite a contrast from what other MMOs have to offer, which is largely just button-mashing and waiting for cooldowns. I'm a bit concerned that Old Republic will have GREAT story and characters, but when it comes down to what we're going to be doing the majority of the time, actually playing the game, I'm worried it'll just be another grindfest. GW2 on the other hand seems eager to break the MMO mold and rather than force classes to be typecast into performing one of the "holy MMORPG trilogy roles"(tank, DPS, heal)they seem eager to make classes to be dynamic enough to perform a myriad of different roles at different levels.

Again I'm basing my suppositions on what information we already have. I understand that it's far too early to make a definitive judgment, and I hope I'm wrong about Old Republic not being all that groundbreaking outside of storyline and character development, but I'm curious as to which game YOU think will be more innovative and why.

Here's some more info on what's being promised in both games:

"ArenaNet want Guild Wars 2 combat to be ?more like a first person shooter?"

that title can be incredibly miss-leading to someone who hasn't read the combat article on GW2 website.

http://www.guildwars2.com/en/the-game/combat/

all that FPS comparison was about was that a players weapon that they are wielding will grant them unique abilities and different TYPES of damage (aoe, stun, cleave, bleeds, etc). saying its "like an FPS" can mislead people into thinking COD the MMO.

but yeah GW2, if they can pull off the stuff they say they want to do there will be a massive revolution in mmo gaming that can potentially de-throne WoW (NOT KILL) as the #1 MMO with all the insanely ambitious plans they have. But ill believe it when i see it, there have been claims to countless MMOs in the past (AoC, WO, Aion, etc etc)

elementalists = the shit by the way, 4 elements that have different roles = so damn awsome

Edit:

Oops, read that wrong. The most innovative gameplay? Honestly, after readings stuff on both, I don't think neither will bring that much new to the table. They both have a few things that set them apart a bit so that they have their own flavour, but on the whole I think it doesn't matter that much.

Guild Wars 2

Been following it since it was announced (still play the first ones on occasion) and it looks a lot more interesting the The Old Republic. Just check out the official GW2 website to see what its about, then have a look at TOR and decide.

To me it depends if your a fan of Sci-fi (lasers and space technology) or Fantasy (Swords and Magic)

I am looking forward to both these games really, but for different reasons. What I'm interested in with Guild Wars 2 is the game mechanics and how the world will seem more real with big boss enemies not respawning for you a few minutes after you just slaughtered it and supposedly saved the world and what not; SWTOR however is a BioWare game and as such I'm expecting great writing, an epic storyline, and strong characters, all of this in a large MMO world.

Guild Wars all the way. The only innovation TOR seems to have is the voicing. I was initially excited about it until the gameplay vids when it just seemed generic to me. The mechanics and the like in Guild Wars 2 to me just look like the things that MMOs in general need. I have always had a problem with questing in MMOs and not having a persistent effect on the game world. Guild Wars' dynamic events really seem like they will go some way to improving on this. Not to mention the role flexibility, effect of weapon choice on skills, interaction with world objects and the approach to item drops and crafting.

TOR, although I have my reservations.
Never played Guild Wars and I have reservations.

Both games claim to have great innovation, but then think back to practically every MMO since WoW and none have really come close. Still, WoW is evil because it steals your life (the summer of 2007 never happened for me because I was either at work or playing WoW AND NOTHING ELSE). ABP, Hellgate: London and a few others have promised great innovation, but failed for various reasons. I'm sceptical, but I'll reserve actual judgement for when the games come out.

What I've heard of Guild Wars 2 sounds interesting (I read the PCGamer UK article on it) and it does seem be safely revolutionary in not trying to change too much stuff on the existing formula. Still, I never played the first game and there doesn't seem to be much to draw me to it.
TOR's voice acting, locales, characters classes and such intrigue me, but I share a lot of people's scepticism in that it doesn't appear that much different from other MMOs. It really only wins because Bioware are making it and they made KOTOR, but I would personally prefer just a really good KOTOR 3.

We've already played The Old Republic- all of us who've played an MMO. It's using the same dice heavy system we've had for over a decade, and that has *never* been exciting to me; even less so now that MMOs are beginning to overcome it.

GW2 all the way, and TERA perhaps more so- provided they westernise the grind out properly.

GW2 looks awful in my opinion. I am playing RIFT at the moment while waiting tantalizingly for TOR. From what I have seen, GW2 looks exactly the same as RIFT graphically. Gameplay looks pretty shoddy and far from innovative. Looks just like anything else.
I'm not saying TOR is going to blow the world with it's innovations, but it just looks better by far that GW2.

I only play MMO's that can hook me from the get go on the universe and after playing Guild Wars and looking at GW2 vids I just don't give a flying fuck.I couldn't care less how innovative it is it just doesn't grab me.But when looking at it I CANNOT say they are not doing some really cool fantastic shit even though I probably won't play it.Hats off to them for doing what they're doing but I'll be shootin lazer beams and playin with lightsabers until the 40k mmo comes out...hopefully in 2013.
