It seems like the two biggest contenders for the "next big MMO" are Star Wars: The Old Republic and Guild Wars 2. While yes, it's far to early to have enough evidence to know which will be better, I'm curious as to which you all think will be more "innovative." As a Star Wars fan I've been excited about Old Republic since it was first announced, but while Bioware always has top-notch writing, it seems like story-line is where most of the innovation will take place for Old Republic compared with other MMOs. In terms of game-play itself, everything we've seen of GW2 so far seems quite a contrast from what other MMOs have to offer, which is largely just button-mashing and waiting for cooldowns. I'm a bit concerned that Old Republic will have GREAT story and characters, but when it comes down to what we're going to be doing the majority of the time, actually playing the game, I'm worried it'll just be another grindfest. GW2 on the other hand seems eager to break the MMO mold and rather than force classes to be typecast into performing one of the "holy MMORPG trilogy roles"(tank, DPS, heal)they seem eager to make classes to be dynamic enough to perform a myriad of different roles at different levels.
Again I'm basing my suppositions on what information we already have. I understand that it's far too early to make a definitive judgment, and I hope I'm wrong about Old Republic not being all that groundbreaking outside of storyline and character development, but I'm curious as to which game YOU think will be more innovative and why.
Here's some more info on what's being promised in both games:
