Around the time the 360 came out I found a PS2 in a dumpster. I got it working and bought final fantasy VIII through X. I can honestly say that FF IX is one of the best games I've ever played. Right up there with Oblivion. So, no, I don't think it matters.

Old = Pre Halo 1
New = Halo 1 and on.
What are you, 13 (genuine question not insult)? If there is a dividing line to be made, it ought to be at the advent of 3d games, which in terms of consoles can be more or less marked by the entry of the Sony Playstation into the market. 'Pre Halo 1', really.
Halo is a dividing line. Games changed after Halo. Anyway 3D gaming is not the mark where games become "old." Games made around 10 years ago are old by industry standards.
If you want you can change it to Duke Nukem 3d instead. n im 19. I basically made the line there because that is when main stream games switched to space marines/shooter games where the player has regenerative health all the time. I know that there are games before that had regen, but this is when it started to catch on with the general public as a trend in games (much like the sandbox)

I learned that for the most part that worshipping games for their age is a pretty annoying route to follow. Some of them were unplayable pieces of overly-hard garbage requiring hours of play just to master, sure I know all the Yahtzee types will say "well you've been coddled on all these new-fangled games" okay I'll admit it I pretty much have been, should anyone really have to spend hours and hours playing to master one game?

I'll go with the general "I'm ok as long as it's good".

Also, is it just me or ar 4th and 5th option basicaly the same thing?
I think the 4th option depends on your usual taste for games, meaning that you can find good and bad games along old and new games.

The 5th option seems more depending on your mood, today you might feel nostalgic and go back to old titles, tomorrow you want something new and more complex (or something like that).

Regarding the post, I agree with both 4th and 5th option. If you ask about memories I would say I have mucher better memories of old games as I would gather my family and/or friends to play them, while nowadays its more either a lonely experience or over the internet with anonymous people.

There are tons of old games that are crap, and there are tons that are awesome. Same can be said for new games.
Totally.

I mean, when we think of old games, you know what we things about?

The good games from that era.

Because the bad games were forgotten afterward as they didn't stand the test of time. When people have these kind of conversations in the future, nobody is going to remember games like Zombie-Ninja Pro Am.

Also, what people consider to be bad games nowadays, like Modern Warfare 2 or (in my opinion) Dante's Inferno, are infinitely better than the games considered bad in the old days. So in that regard, our bad games are better than the olden times bad games. And our good games include Shadow of the Colossus, therefore new games instantly win.
You've encapsulated my views on anyone who says, "Games/music/movies/etc. from X years ago were so much better than now". You only remember the good bands, games, actors, and such from the period now because they were the good ones. All the crap sinks to the bottom of the barrel and is forgotten after a few years. Just because Led Zepplin and Black Sabbath came out in the 70s does not mean that decade didn't also have hordes of utterly retarded bands and artists.

A good game is a good game regardless of when it was made. Personally though I prefer "newer" games as they tend to be more intricate and provide more features than older games.

Old was hard because it didn't need to feel epic and realistically tough. It didn't need to be a moive. And you could just have fun getting mario to the end of the world to fight Wart or Bowser

New Hard because of all the elements game makers can program in. AI, Physics, 3-D for puzzles.
But with all that comes with needing to feel like the best or diffrent. But is a rewarding and fun experience

so the best is...

There are plenty of old and new games that are as good as each other. What's more irritating is old games that people get nostalgic about but, due to improved control schemes and better design, are no where near as good as their fanboys make them out to be.

Again - are you 13 and think games started changing 10 years ago?

Old for me is 1992-93 junk. Old are Pokemon games, still black and white, or even NES games I used to play as a small kid.

Halo? Sure it's old. Diablo 2 is older. So is Diablo. Both games better. Doom or Quake are older.

I mean, you might as well say that Xbox is old. Oh, wait, you are saying that...

Even games made five years ago are old. The medium moves fast. Where have you been?

(Pro Tip: don't belittle your opponent in an argument. It makes it look like you don't really have a point.

So you just called Xbox 360 an old console, and games for it "old". And a year from now, PS3 will have been an old console too.

Your argument is faulty because your assumptions are faulty. Better now?

Both new and old games have their charm.

Though I sometimes miss the difficulty in newer games compared to the old ones. Or I just got better in playing games :p.

We're talking about games. I'm not making a value call on games that are five years old, far from it. I'm just saying that developers think of five year old games as old. They don't contribute anything except influence. In other words: little to no money is coming from them. THe Video Game business moves just as fast as the movie business.

On the subject of Halo:
The regenerating health system was copied into most shooters and many RPGs. The checkpoint system started to show up in every game ever. The control layout for first-person games is now copied from Halo, with one or two minor changes. Space marines have become the default protagonists. Online multilayer has become popular on consoles mostly thought Halo. The Halo series almost single-handedly launched an entire line of consoles.

It is easy to see a divide. If you call it old vs. new that is your business. I personally find anything without a checkpoint system to be outdated.
