Most of my martial arts weapon training has been with the knife so I'll go with that.
However, if I was able to take one weapon to instantly become a master of, it would have to be the whip.

A halberd of course! All the practicality of a spear, with an axe added on for when they dodge your jab. ^^
I dont see the point in this thread as there is so many different old weapons from hundreds of cultures.
My favourites are Short swords (So I chose daggers). Quick, efficient, Didnt break, Easy to learn, difficult to master and the Spartans and the Romans used them. Two of the best soldiers ever in history.
My second favourite are Black Eggs used by Ninjas of old. I cant remember exactly what they contain but you could throw them in the eyes of your opponent pretty much leaving them wide open too attack.

I'd go for the lance, as in the good ol' cavalry charge. However, out of the available choices, halberd wins as a badass spear/axe combo
Scythe. When you're not killing people, you can use it to harvest wheat. Remember to clean the blood of first.
Wait hang on! Why no bows? They're easily the best weapons ever, never mind from the olden days! Plus they were more powerful than any of the previously mentioned weapons. 
Battle axe. You can have either big or small ones and when in doubt you can throw them. Not to mention, you won't be getting up after that...
