what is your opinion on monthly subscription fees?

Personally I think they are a good thing, they keep the servers clean and up to date, and usually pay to fix any major problems.

also...
DOES ANYONE KNOW WHETHER OR NOT AION HAS A MONTHLY FEE?
I've looked through the site and can't find anything
help please

Well it keeps the servers and stuff clean, but its a pain in the ass to keep up with the monthly payments.

Same here. I never get the feeling that horrible little things with bugger all gameplay other than 'click here, type here to call anyonymous internet tit nasty names' deserve my money, so I only play free versions.

If it allows a good game that I am playing to continue running, then yeah, it seems worth it. Also, I'm pretty sure Aion will have a monthly fee similar to WoW.

They are awful, but I tend to avoid mmo's like the plague anyways. I understand the need to fund people to patch and such, but I've paid for the game JUST LET ME PLAY IT! don't make me jump through hoops with making a billing account and then slowly drain my savings; while you slowly drain the hours of my life.

No such thing as a free lunch. With all the overhead costs and the continuing development of a virtual world, a small subscription cost is a necessary evil. Its not even as big a deal that people make it into, if you can't afford such a small amount you probably shouldn't be spending money on games anyways.

I have paid for many online sub fee's and believe them to be a necessary evil.
They help with the upkeep of the server and the game, usually brings about more varied updates and content to keep the game fun and interesting.
And the usual 'membership priviledges' add that extra zing to many games, such as my most recent exploit of Dofus where you basically gain 30x the map, enemies, increased craft skills and so much more for what really is a pittance to the enjoyment factor you recieve.

I don't play MMOs but I can see why they'd charge a monthly subscription, especially when you consider how much it takes to maintain a game like WoW, as well as continually come up with additions for it.

Some MMOs requires fees for patches, glitches and new dungeons.

WoW gave new raids for a free patch. Some MMO would make you pay a full expansion pack for these raids.

If they make a game better, if it makes sure that I have a fairly-constant (well, constant for stuff like game content) stream of new game content to amuse myself. If it means that they can quickly get to work on glitches they didn't catch in playtesting (seriously, everyone is bashing MMOs for being released "half-done" the games are freaking huge, it's really hard to catch some glitches that seem painfully apparent when people start playing) then yeah, online fees can be good. That said, I dislike paying for a complete game at launch when the game is unrefined, some classes are painfully broken while others are underpowered, and the game is new in general.

90 days past already? Hm.

Anyway, it depends on the game. Guild Wars is free, but it releases expansion packs instead of patches. However because of that those expansions aren't obligatory, while the patches most certainly are. For things like WoW, I can understand why online fees exist and they only serve to enhance the experience, but for other online games I don't think there should be such fees.

I don't mind paying for XBox Live, I can play any multipalyer title I like on the 360 as long as I have a gold subscription.

But I don't think I'd pay a subscription for a single title.

Monthly fees are good, but I believe they should be kept to MMORPGs.

I gave a hearty NO!
Fees are the reason I don't play mmos; though I might try that free D&D one this weekend.
Fees are also one of the reasons I got a ps3 instead of a 360.

It depends upon the game, and the fees. I don't mind monthly fees if they're reasonable and they're used for network maintainance and (especially) paying staff to run the game and (even more especially) enforce the Terms of Use and Policies. If a game is riddled with gold-farmers and griefers but the studio behind it just keeps collecting fees without doing anything to clear them out, I'll stop paying in a heartbeat.

Edited to add: The only game-related fee I'm paying right now is Xbox Live, though. The fees are pretty low, and though there are jerks on the service I know there's an enforcement team culling their numbers.

Easy to easy this thread. I'll use online on consoles for this example.

Xbox Live vs. PSN.

I don't know a single person who can honestly say PSN is better.
I have accounts on both.
XBL: VanityGirl
PSN: Super Vanity

I prefer and honestly think that when you pay for something, there's a more better chance that the services will be better. The online may also be a lot better if you pay.
