It is a huge deal. Because Gears of War 2 supports 2-player split-screen, It's become my most played game. I almost always have a friend over, and since I quite enjoy video-games, we usually play a fair bit. There is nothing more boring than watching your friend "own it up" while you watch because the damn devs were too cheap to include such a key feature.

Sorry, I misread the poll before voting. I thought it said that online multiplayer needs to stop, not online-only multiplayer.

And yes, I think that is bullshit. Playing online is fun, but nothing beats playing with your siblings and friends in the same room on the same couch. Nothing pisses me off more than having a game with great multiplayer that can't be played locally.

Yeah I completely agree with you OP
Also have you ever noticed that it causs people to say absured things, get ridiculously angry and just ingenerally act like a dick

For example my brother is a perfectly nice kid, goes on cod4 and he turns into an asshole. Want more? Then go check out the millions of videos on youtube about people getting pissed off online

That's what I hate about multiplayer and yeah it would be nice if there was more local multiplayer in video games but most people have jobs, school or places to be and don't have time for dicking around in video games. So when they do get a chance to play, then they probably want to vent some anger at a random person and not friends or family

Atleast thats my theory

I really don't play video games with friends all that often. If I have friends over, the last thing I want to do is play a video game that I can play any time I want. I'd rather spend the time, oh I don't know, going OUTSIDE! Scary concept for some.

Plus, Online Multiplayer is great. You can talk all the shit you want and never have any consequences for it!

Well, at least they are more clear about it now.

I remember for a few years they didn't have a marking for "Online multiplayer/coop only"
so when you read the back of the box, see "4 PLAYER COOP" and then you take it home, call your buddies over, only to realize its online only.

At least they tell us now.
but I agree, its damn stupid.

I loved LAN parties when I was younger, we'd get four or five friends over and their parents and all would sit down and play AOE. I totally forgot about that until I started playing online again, LAN's a bit harder to come by these days which is annoying.

I agree. Dammit, I want to kill my friend who only has a Wii in a game I know I'll win in!

My God, yes! It's absolutely ridiculous! Why would anyone not want local multiplayer. I mean, don't get me wrong, online is fine. But I'd much rather play with my friends... in the same room... on the same game console.
I don't have any friends that are near-enough to go to their house or them to mine, so online Multiplayer is the only way I can play with my friends.

What will happen to me? I will be forced to rot by myself?

I love online multiplayer, I really do, but I do agree that splitscreen multiplayer and LAN functionality should never disappear. Nothing beats beating your opponents face to face.

Online MP is great, but to try and phase out LAN is ridiculous and even stupid! ...starcraft II...

My little brother is new to FPS games but because we could play COD WAW together splitscreen I was able to help him get the hang of them and give him hints and tips.

It was such a fucking buzz killing Nazis together and watching how excited he got as he got more and more kills.

At least MW2 will have splitscreen spec ops. I think?

Am I the only person who doesn't use LAN ?
I mean, I signed the starcraft petition for the hell of it, but is it all that great ?

But I will admit I have had some good times with splitscreen

Same console multiplayer offline isn't a problem for me although I'd prefer it if more games had a feature so more people could play online from the same console (like what halo 3 has)

No, of course not. I love online, too. I just want local to not be completely removed from games.

The OP isn't saying online multiplayer is a bad thing. Hell, online multiplayer is great.

The problem is games that say "You can play multiplayer, but even though your system can support up to four controllers at once, you can only play our game over the internet. If you want to play with your friends in the same room, you must each have your own seperate system/game/subscription." That is a major problem. Some of today's older gamer's best memories are that of yelling taunts at their friends while they're sitting next to each other after blasting them with a red shell in Mario Kart 64, or saying "how the fuck did you fall for that?" after planting a trip mine in Goldeneye.

Split-screen single-console multiplayer is dying out, and it's a very, VERY sad thing. That's the issue here.
Thanks for this post, helped clear things up for me.

I realized I made the completely wrong choice when I clicked on "it's a good thing". Right after, I thought about games like L4D, LBP, WaW....

Having local multiplayer is good.
