There's a new Open Source handheld device called Pandora . I wasn't aware of its existence till yesterday.
Here's the specifications:
ARM® Cortex?-A8 600Mhz+ CPU running Linux
430-MHz TMS320C64x+? DSP Core
PowerVR SGX OpenGL 2.0 ES compliant 3D hardware
800x480 4.3" 16.7 million colours touchscreen LCD
Wifi 802.11b/g, Bluetooth & High Speed USB 2.0 Host
Dual SDHC card slots & SVideo TV output
Dual Analogue and Digital gaming controls
43 button QWERTY and numeric keypad
Around 10+ Hours battery life
As you can see, it's the most powerful handheld device to this day. Just look at it! Sure it looks like a DS but it does all the things I ever wanted from a handheld. The fact that this device is open source means that you're free to do whatever you want with the hardware and the games. For example you can play Super Mario 64! You still have to buy it though (330 Euros)... LOL.

Check out this link:

You'll find all the info that you might want to know.

Here's the best review I have:

Agreed, simply cuz it's not one of the usual companies that I'm used to, which is silly...

Not really a fan of handhelds, but looks ok. One problem, Where/what is its library? A console is no good if no one programs for it. i would have thought they would have some titles listed on their site.

@ TheComedown,
You can emulate Nintendo 64 games and pretty much any game that the console can run. In other words it already has more games than the DS and the PSP combined.
In terms of development the console is still being developed.
The thing is that everyone is allowed to improve the software and the hardware. So if a studio like DICE wants to make a game for it, they're free to do so and to charge as much as they'd like.

"I know you're out there. I can feel you now. I know that you're afraid. You are afraid of us, You're afraid of change.

I don't know the future. I didn't come here to tell you how this is going to end. I came here, to tell you how it's going to begin. I'm going to hang up this phone, and then I'm going to show these people what you don't want them to see.

I am going to show them a world without you. A world without rules and controls, without borders or boundaries. A world, where anything is possible.

Where we go from there, is a choice I leave to you."

It's open source.

I can almost guarantee it will have more games on it than any other handheld.

I'd absolutely love one, but at a cheaper price because I don't need to start spending even more of my non existent money into games. Had I disposable income I'd be all over this.

Considering the things it does, I'd say it's reasonably priced. But I do understand you.

So, I could pay 330 euros for a handheld that could play Super Mario 64, a game that came out 14 years ago and I could easily play on my PC, OR, I could use that same money to buy myself a PS3 Slim and have enough money to buy a used DS. Decisions...

It seems like a game-oriented BlackBerry. Personally, I've never used Linux because I think that profit will almost always drive a product to better quality.

Also:

Grate = Great
Apealing = Appealing
Misserable = Miserable

Sorry... I couldn't help it.

And how many quality games? Chances are you'll be filtering through so much crap just to find anything worth playing, seems like to much hassle for 330 euros or whatever it is.

@ Echo136,
You do realize the point here, right?
Let me sum it up for you...
PSP plus 12 games (average) @ 30$ each = 510$!
DSi plus 12 games (average) @ 25$ each = 450$!
Ps3 plus 12 games (average) @ 60$ each = 1200$!
Pandora plus the latest game software (ehem..Free..ehem) = A big selection of SD cards!
Imo, Pandora is competing head on.

Ignoring your pointless quote from some movie I don't remember or care about, here is the thing, Studios CAN but they WONT. There will not be the consumer base there to make investing all that money in the development of games for it worthwhile. It's not well known and its open source (the big companies don't like this at all) the main audience for this device is gadget nerds, not the average gamer, let alone your average handheld gamer.

As you said everyone can make software for it, there is going to be a crap load of bedroom programmers churning out crap for it. oh and yay emulator, because I want to pay 330 euros to play something I can play for free at home. Is playing a 10 year old game on a bus/in the office, etc worth 330 euros?

Your assertion taken at face value implies that I will get games for free on this device. Now, why might I ask would a company go through the effort to make a game for this device and not charge for it on a regular basis? I suspect the answer is "they won't" which means what you are actually advocating is that I use this device for piracy.

I have several problems with this assertion. First, were I the sort of degenerate who pirated games (inflammatory language!), I already have, at my disposable, three platforms where piracy is incredibly common. Second, I am not the sort of degenerate who plays pirated games and then offers some rationalization justifying such actions.

There's a problem with all this talk about the emulators it can run. A CFW PSP can run plenty of emulators, plus it has its own library. A smartphone can run plenty of emulators, and again has its own library. In particular there's the iControlPad for iPhone coming out, which gives you access to all the iOS games, emulators on a JB system and the physical controls to make use of them.

If a system relies on emulation it'll sink, until Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft and Apple lock down their systems so that homebrew software won't run. Then a product like this actually becomes relevant.

It's also where the GP2X Canoo is much better - it's being slightly unusual by including a proper analog stick, which indicates it'll be used for new games more than just emulation.
