Pokémon... It is the reason I bought a handheld and is the reason I'm still playing one.

I'd like to get a Pandora. Seems like a neat platform for hacking; much more power than the DS (the Cortex-A8 is very nice) and less hoops to jump through to get my code running. Only real problem with it is the PowerVR. It's pretty powerful, but the state of the drivers in the kernel is somewhat questionable, and it can be pretty finicky to get things running properly on it.

But, games? Short-sighted. This could easily replace my DS, my graphing calculator, my kanji dictionary, and my notes with a little effort. Among other things.

The design is terrible in my eyes. its a clusterfuck of buttons with a knockoff casing from the DS. I would never buy this. it looks like shit and more than likely works like shit too. Pass.

I want the 3DS.

Its pretty much a smartphone with the phone part removed and gaming buttons slapped on. I don't think this thing is going to cause a storm.

Take the iPhone for example. It's more expensive, but it can do (almost) everything Open Pandora can and more importantly, has a vastly larger install base and is thus a more interesting platform to develop for.

It's a very nice piece of hardware and if you have ripped carts to emulate it's probably immediately worth it but more than that, this is a tour de force of an open source community.

They managed to create a hand-held of fantastic quality with high end parts that had enough buttons for palmtop use and gaming all positioned suitably at reasonable cost per unit given production scale.

Not only that but they drummed up and maintained the support of the community long enough to get this thing into production, delivered and start accepting new orders.

To you it may be a small but powerful computer with no good games and no-supporting companies but to those that have one it's the culmination of 2 years work.

It'll be interesting to see what the community goes on to make for it and if they really can rival the commercial market in quality. Now they have their own playground where they don't have to deal with weird hardware arrangements like pc but aren't locked down like a commercial console they might spend less time bug hunting.

@ TheComedown,
You can emulate Nintendo 64 games and pretty much any game that the console can run. In other words it already has more games than the DS and the PSP combined.
In terms of development the console is still being developed.
The thing is that everyone is allowed to improve the software and the hardware. So if a studio like DICE wants to make a game for it, they're free to do so and to charge as much as they'd like.
here is the thing, Studios CAN but they WONT. There will not be the consumer base there to make investing all that money in the development of games for it worthwhile. It's not well known and its open source (the big companies don't like this at all) the main audience for this device is gadget nerds, not the average gamer, let alone your average handheld gamer.

As you said everyone can make software for it, there is going to be a crap load of bedroom programmers churning out crap for it. oh and yay emulator, because I want to pay 330 euros to play something I can play for free at home. Is playing a 10 year old game on a bus/in the office, etc worth 330 euros?
It all comes down to what you want. Pandora is perfect for what I want but still I will wait for a proper OSS update. And btw you should check the sales on the website, and then talk about a consumer base.

With a tiny collection of games (don't bring up emulation. that shit's illegal) it kinda fails as a handheld gaming device. I mean, it's cool, and I wish it were better, but I think that in the end, it's just a fairly lame, really small Linux laptop with joysticks.

Whats that?

No Kingdom hearts?

Pass.

More seriously... Sorta(No KH pretty much seals the deal on the system anyways)
Also saying that since you can put illegal rips of games on the system doesn't mean it has a bigger library then the other handhelds. It means it has little to no library and must resort to leeching off others to look attractive.

I know this comes as a shock to some people, but there are a large number of us that want nothing to do with illegal file sharing.

Ok... You won't have any problem playing Open Source games. There are many of those too.

You compare it to a laptop... It's a handheld for God's sake! Compare it to other handhelds!

you mean those crappy flash games that make newgrounds look like a model of gaming quality.
Flash games aren't open source. (usually)
