I really hate blind little fanboys that think Steam is some paragon of virtue. I know enough enough people who have been screwed over by Steam, and had their whole account ripped off, my brother included. To paraphrase Yahtzee a little; Valve is like a stripper: They don't actually like you but pretend to so you can give them your money. I use Steam for one or two games, but I'll never have a library of games with games that cost more than $10 each and of more total than what I spent already of around $65, basically the price of one console game.

I just don't trust Steam, and so far I don't use Origin. Though I have heard good things about it from friends who do. Origin is a little rough, but so far a good store front and you don't need it running to play games since it's basically just a down-loader for them. So I'm really hoping Origin does well, and after Steams extra little hissy fit of pulling EA games from it's lineup if they aren't allowed to make money off of it's DLC I'm also hoping Steam gets taken down a peg.

As much as I hate EA's marketing, I love the games their devs make. It's a though nut to crack, I'll probably get those games physical. I think that one company having access to my money is more than enough. Origin is wasting Steams time with this bullshit.

I'm not quite sure what you're saying in this abomination of a sentence, but Steam offers cheaper prices than brick and mortar stores for games, especially with the periodic sales they have. Case in point, I got Mass Effect 1 and 2 for $10, Assassin's Creed 1-3 for $30, Portal 2 for $25, and tons of indie games for under $2.50.

Do there really need to be battlelines? I use consoles most of the time, but I do use Steam often. And I'll likely use Origin for Battlefield 3. Is there something so wrong, so terrible that stops one from just using both? Sure, I'll likely use Steam a hell of a lot more, but I'll use Origin if needed.

He is an adult, he knows about security, and doesn't tell his passwords to anyone, even me. He just didn't use Steam for a few months when he tried to again he couldn't, he contacted customer support they just told him his account was banned and refused to say why or try to fix it.

If Origin gives me 75% off sales like Steam/D2D does, sure, I'll use it. Until then, no dice. Probably never, actually, considering EA doesn't want to give away their stuff like that.

I do understand why some people still buy EA products, but it is not for me. I think the poll speaks volumes.

I prefer Steam for its sales, but it doesn't really matter to me, I can just as well download a few titles from Origin or buy a disc copy.

Not sure why you quoted me then, I didn't say Steam has always got the cheapest price. In fact, my entire point is that people care more about the price than the place they download it from.

Steam will win, but it's a shame. There should be competition for it, otherwise it's a monopoly.

You're kidding, right?
Steam is NOT the only digital distribution platform out there.
Gamer's Gate, Direct2Drive, Good Old Games, Impulse are all there. They make enough money to keep going, so it's not like steam has anything approaching a monopoly, even without the competition from Origin.

My opinion is thus - Anyone who is loyal to a particular digital distribution platform is a fool and a fools fool at that. It does not MATTER which program you load up to play your game, or which distribution software you need to download it; they're utterly irrelevant to anyone with an ounce of common sense.

The ONLY things that matter are thus

- Which has it cheaper
- Which downloads faster
- Which has good security for my Credit card details.

And it really only comes down to the first one when you *really* think about it. There's not really a good way to measure each platforms digital security (and both are likely to be as good as one another) and Whatever download speed they have is ultimately going to be hindered by *your* connection speed. Not theirs.

So really, whichever is cheapest. I mean there's not even any grass-roots, "support the small business" reason to support one over the other. They're both multi-million dollar companies, they both publish their own unique games and they both suck from time to time.

My money goes to whichever asks for the least amount of money, simple as.

It's really not that big a deal to have to use Origin to play EA games, and frankly, it's good that there is some competition in the market. That way Steam will feel more pressure to act competitively - selling games at a lower cost, making Steam more user-friendly, etc. They already are doing most of it, but it's added incentive.

It doesn't matter whether Origin tanks or takes over as the new distribution service for gamers. Either way, the userbase wins.

Although I use steam I don't entirely trust it, and only use it to get a game when it is the only way of buying said game. I do like steam, but the idea that I don't own the actual game bothers me. Origin seems really stupid, in that you own even less of the game than Steam lets you. For this reason I wouldn't go anywhere near it...

I'm confused about this is any different than Battle.net for WoW and other Blizzard games? You don't find those on Steam and yet there isn't a daily cry for its immediate failure and destruction despite Blizzard's connection to Activision. I'm not up here to defend EA or its business practices but lets keep some perspective: you want a system that one of this site's favorite developers (Bioware) is forced to use to sell and operate their games with because you dislike the publisher.

MHmmm, this was playing on my mind aswell, i think people dont consider them because they are a pc exclusive club and so far haven't screwed their playerbase like EA. supporting Diablo 2 for far longer then they should and they have a public face ... like blizzcon. Its also pretty obvious they have a sense of humor (implementing that lorekeeper dwarf, alot of the questnames .. and so on) and doesn't release games untill they are ready.
People still see it as blizzard and not an activision devision

Ea on the other hand ... not the best of reputation and they have literary distroyed anything they have touched ..

I've just made my first purchase on Origin (BF3 pre-order) and it really wasn't that bad. The checkout is just as easy as Steam. I'd prefer it if I could have just stuck to Steam for everything, but this whole thing doesn't actually need battle lines. They are both valid DDS' competing with each other. Our loyalties should be to ourselves and our wallets, not which one is 'better'.

Uhm.. I'll root for both, I guess. Origin isn't all bad. The only problem, is that it only supports EA titles.

Oh and EA's customer support is a fucking joke. Which is the other problem.
I work in customer support. If one of my colleagues tells a customer, what the EA representative told me, they would get escalated and smacked in the freakin' gob.
Not rudeness, just general god-damn incompetence.
