Something I read in a thread about the media has me thinking. What will happen when my generation gets old enough to be politically involved in the world. To clarify what generation I'm talking about, I'm 15, a gamer, and some would call me a pessimest.

In my opnion our generation could bring a lot of change. It's already easy to tell that we think differently than those who ame before us. Though not nescessarily in a good way, as I said I'm a bit of a pessimest. It's hard not to be at least a little wary of the things that are happening in the world around us. We have recession and war and natural dissasters all around, who whouldn't be? But how about from a gamers standpoint?

In the span of my life we've gone from the only console being the N.E.S to three competing companies hving the Xbox 360, the Playstation 3 and the Wii. Technology has improved an incredable amount and games are gradually becoming much more mainstream. While all of this is good, there is also some bad. Games are increasingly often getting the blame for things that they havn't done. I'm sure everyone has seen stories in the news about angry teenagers running away from home because their Halo was taken away or the more grim stories of killings related to games. The media seems all too ready to blame anything but the people in the incedents themselves, and gaming just happens to be taking the rap instead. The media has made claims that video games make children violent, or unhealthy in any number of ways, but being in a community such as the Escapist, it's hard to believe their madness.

Now to get back to my origional idea, what will happen when these gamers that are getting all the blame get into positions where they have the power to change peoples opnion on games, and for that matter anything else? Our generation has clearly seen things like the media and the government fail, we've been insulted and unfairly judged for being gamers among other things. So what will happen when we're the ones on top, when we're the ones calling the shots for the media?

(NOTE: the poll is for anyone who will come here to say "I've seen this amillion times cehck the search bar you nub" or something of the like)

Well, I'm not a search bar nazi, but repeating threads is not very nice. I haven't seen one of these during the time I have been here so I'm not complaining.

On topic, I naturally agree with you on the fact that I don't beleave that video games are the cause of all misery in the world. On the other hand, I don't beleave it's about who's in charge, more of what's the new form of entertainment with violence in it. I beleave we will be (or atleast some of us will) hunting down the next form of entertainment. Don't know what it will be, but it makes sense.

Talkin 'bout my generation [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_e6_0jvlKik]? As for your question, that depends for the fact is we may never end up on top, at least while all the baby boomers are alive. They had limitless opportunities and those that took them often still have those same positions, leaving us with nothing and thus "the lost generation" or whatever it's called. If you don't get what I mean, just let Tyler Durden do the talking [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e_TSSj27k1A&feature=related]. Our children may get their chance after all the old ones rot and die, but we haven't seen that generation yet so who knows what they'll end up doing with their power, maybe they'll create Armageddon. Who knows?

I knew somone would refrence The Who. Anyway I'm hoping the baby boomers will just quietly move into retirement homes...or die. As it is we're going to end up paying crazy taxes because there will be so many elderly people and thus pensions and other needs to be payed for by the work force(us). But trying to stay on the topic of gaming(sort of) I think when we get into political power(if we ever do) the world might finally see just a little bit of the sad truth. Which could potentially be beneficial, cause you know people might then have to think for once.

Hmmm, intelligent topic I must say.

You raise an interesting question, but can it be certain that our generation will get into positions of power? Even so, they may not be gamers like all the people here on the Escapist.

Well true, but it's not so much that our generation are gamers but that they're different.

Like Boomers before me, I fear the day when the next generation gets older and gets into a position of power and influence. I think the older generation were a bunch of materialistic, selfish, me-me-me over-consumers who ought to be stuck in gulags masquerading as nursing homes as fit penance for their economic sins, and I think the younger generation is a bunch of materialistic, selfist, me-me-me petulant children who have never heard of restraint or delayed gratification.

But Generation X? We kick ass. Enjoy the next 15-20 years of Gen-X presidents, the rebirth of American glory, and environmental and social moves toward eliminating Boomer visions of income inequality and a new Gilded Age. Then in 2030 (I'll be 53) I'm moving to Europe.

Sadly I, for the most part, agree. As a generalization my generation is one of least intelligent, and most materialisticly selfish of them all. I prefer to think I along with the people I actualy have some respect for are exceptions to this rule.

I wouldn't want to speculate, but I'm extremely curious to see how the world will develop when Gen Y and Z are in charge. How will those generations develop into adulthood. Sure some people would say "Oooo they'll screw everything up!" but that's what all generations say about the next. I'm just very curious. And obviously we will be in power one day, simply because the older generations die off.

Just imagine what kind of day it will be when the last WW2 veteran dies, it's an extremely wierd idea, but it will happen. Gods I want to live forever, just to see how humanity develops.

My search bar nazi side only shows itself when it is completely obvious the OP didn't use it.

We've had enough Transformers and Prototype threads. When will people realize that.

well, you know, when i was young, there was also full of blames on video games just like your generation had (i'm generation X just to clearify things) So technically, you will be the second generation of gamers to be in place. not the first. When you will be 20-25, chances that your boss had played every generation of gaming console that have existed (wich NES is not comming as the oldest one).

it will probably not change much because there will always be people that dont play games that will have misconception about them. the gaming population is not a majority in every generation...

Our generation enjoys rap and thinks Michael Bay makes "like, totally deep movies, dawg."

All I can say is that we are so incredibly fucked when people like this get into positions of power, I can't even begin to describe in words just how fucked we are.
I see your of the pessimistic variety aswell. Consider this: hopefully anyone one in our generation who does get into a place that holds some power has the intelligence that was necessary to get there. That has to count for something right?

I'm a bit confused by your maths, or age, or generation.

You say that in the span of your life, the N.E.S. was the only console available, yet you also say you're only 15.

The N.E.S. was released 11 years before you were born, and by 1994 there were about 8 different consoles available, not including the Amiga and Atari ST.

In fact you were born on the cusp of the 5th Generation of consoles, so I don't know why you think the N.E.S. was the only system available.

Are you sure you're not 25?

Then again, last generation was full with "Oh, man, that's so groooovy. Dude, lighten up, man. Life's not meant to be rushed"

Wasn't the last generation the ones that got blamed with "TV is destroying us all and sending the children on mah lawn" when they were young? I suppose it worked for them.

Hmm you raise a good point, I think I meant to say the the N.E.S was on top of the market in terms of consoles at the time that I was born. Atari and it's competitors came much earlier and yes the NES was released 11 years before I was born but in terms of popular consoles I believe it was still one of the only ones around at the time. Correct me if I'm wrong on that one.

I think that was something akin to paradoxial.... in any case my point was this seems to be different in a different way.

Hey, you're absolutely right.
Intelligence is what gets people into office.

Out of curiosity, who was the governor of Alaska until just recently?
Yeah...

Yes, and how's that economy doing?
Still going strong, I trust?
Hey common I'm just saying there's a chance. I try to stay exactly between being a pessimest and being an optomist.
