Personally, I do not think WWII is overdone so much as that certain events from WWII have been overdone. Outside of military sims, a lot of WWII games tend to cover the same battles. Game developers in particular seem to have an obsession with the Normandy campaign. This is kind of sad, considering WWII was an enormous conflict, which provides for a large number of potential settings and participants. But since this has not been utilised, it gives off the impression that WWII games are overdone.
This.

While it seems like WW2 is overdone, there is a lot of untapped material that has yet to have been put into a video game. For example: I have yet to see a WW2 game where you play as the Germans/Japanese/*insert axis country here* in the single player campaign, nor have I yet seen a well done alternate-history WW2 game (well, FPS at least).
There actually is a lot of potential in the WW2 genre, it's just that everything that has been done so far in relation to WW2 in video games has been overdone and few have tried to try something different or original.

And I'm jumping on the "fantasy is overdone" bandwagon here. I mean, how many games set or made to look like their set in the typical fantasy-dark ages do we need?
