Guys, don't even try to convince me that I was the only one who's arm twitched when the words "elbow rocket engaged" were spoken ;)

Ranting and spoilers ahead!

That said, characters could have been so much more interesting, it's just inexusable, the big plan was so bad that it deserved to fail (why not strap bombs to every robot? Then anyone who makes it to the rift will be able to blow it up! I don't belive that everyone in the world pooled together to build mechs and a stupid wall from scratch but they won't give the military any nukes so that they have to get the under-the-counter one from Russia. India is probably in the danger zone - don't you think they would spare a couple of bombs to have a shot at ending that thing? Hell, Germany is getting rid of their arsenal - they would give them any number they wanted. Besides, if they know the intervals between crossings, don't just wait for a 4th Jager - send one immediately after an invasion, when nothing's about to come out for a week) and the fact they killed off 2 "foreign" crews on the first occasion they had? It would have been better if Mako just fried them by accident. How great would it be if Del Torro pulled a George Martin and killed off the main teams so that the russians and the chinese triplets have to get things done? :D ok, I'll not be greedy, kill off just one of the main 2 mechs and I'll be happy... Although I'd prefer if the aussies survived :p

i am surprised how many people had so high expectations on this flick.

i mean giant robots vs monsters is nothing new.
this.

If you went in expecting more, your doing it wrong. At no point did any of the trailers give hint this would be a sweeping epic full of excellently written characters, no, they showed us robots fighting monsters o.o why where you expecting more then that?

Hell >.> I'd have liked at least one more Jager VS Kaiju battle then we got, but what we got was very good.
This is such poor reasoning in my eyes. Just because a premise is simple and straight forward doesn't mean it can't be executed with finesse and skill. Saying "how dare you expect one part of the film's team to do their jobs well because the trailer didn't indicate much one way or the other" just sounds silly. What's more, you're making a strawman, as I never mentioned sweeping epic. I explicitly stated I like the cliche archetypes in play. I just wanted them done BETTER, and having them done better simply wouldn't have required less attention or care be put into the action. If anything it would have just made the audience more invested. Seriously, I don't see either of your comments as making very good cases against my position.
your 'position' means little to nothing to me, as does your desire to get into an argument over a 'popcorn movie' because what you saw is what you got, I posted my opinion on the matter, and whether you like or not is really your problem.
Hey, no need to get post such a passive aggressive response because I disagreed with you. You're posting in a forum. Get used to people contesting your comments. I'd think after 8k+ posts you'd be cool with a little mild debating, sorry to offend (even though I'm guessing you'd say something about not being offended or caring at all, yadda yadda).

The movie was great for what it was.

Were people going into it expecting the Godfather or some such?
people seem to have this weird binary conception of what movies can be. There's a huge spectrum of quality that exists in films. Some of us were just hoping that the movie could have notched it up in a few different departments like plotting and dialogue. I didn't want Charlie Kaufman levels of depth, just something that would have really made me enjoy watching the characters on screen or at least genuinely care about them.

No your not, other wise you wouldn't have sound so smug when you quoted me the first time, besides, I already said all I'm going to say. The rest is for you to mull over.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have an Rp that needs attention.

I think you sounded far more smug than me in your initial comment, but to each his own. Regardless, it looks like we've both said our bits and agree that the other is in the wrong lol. Have fun with your RP.

OMG!! a movie that's trying to actually BE what it set out to be... GIANT ROBOTS FIGHTING GIANT MONSTERS!! *gasp* and people are complaining? da fux?

personally i liked that the plot was simple and the characters already developed and not having long drawn out overly dower exposition of 'why they feel bad and whine whine whine' -.- i want that i'll go watch anything else that's out nowadays... i want something specifically depressing i'll go rewatch the original EVA series or grave of the fireflies... i wanted to watch GIANT ROBOTS FIGHTING GIANT MONSTERS with this movie, i got that... the characters seemed real, human, and for fucking once SENSIBLE!! not fucking plot-tarded, i love Del Toro cause he seems to be good at that, not making people fucking retarded for plots-sake then spending needless time wasting to explain that... movies are SHORT, you want that BS, go watch a series where they can fully develop it, in movies you want quick and simple and fucking great... less its a drama then that's all its about, spending 2hrs figuring out ONE character... woo~ .-.

perhaps one of the best things i loved about the characters is that this ISN'T about their damn problems, they're there, sure, they are human, but whats more important is the fact the goddamn world is ending due to GIANT FUCKING ELDRIC GOD MONSTERS!! and for fucking once they have the bloody sense to not only recognize that, but ACT on it!! they're here to save the world, not have group therapy... i mean jesus christ, just jesus h. christ i'm so sick of that plot-tarded-ness... and for once when seeing Maiko i wasn't thinking 'oh, and here's the love interest' i was thinking 'HOLY FUCK!! an actually properly acted Japanese woman!! *squee* i want to hug her!!' and the main character wasn't a wangsty prick where his 'issues' are more important then the world, THANK FUCKING GOD!! but the thing is, he actually HAS issues worthy of fucking all of humanity if most movies/stories are to be believed, but he doesn't, he fucking doesn't!! is he typical white-male-lead? sure, do i care? not at this point, he suffered legit trauma, both felt and effectively saw his brother die... AND GOT PAST IT!! mostly, at least enough to keep being a human being... thank fucking god!! so sick of whiney angsty *****-MCs... and ya know what, so what if Chevok's gun was all over the place for the people, it was done right and not retardedly obvious, yay~ subtlety!! :D

body language and nuances seemed fine to me and all i needed to explain what was what and who was who, so what if the russians and chinese aren't main characters, you can tell just by looking at them the Russians are badasses and the Chinese kids are tongs, they had their good fight, yes, they are extras, so? we kinda need extras to be expendable, otherwise this is a far too optimistic and unrealistic place i don't want to be, people die, i'm sorry, some characters are simply there for that .-. i rather like four-man plays thank you, where we only focus on four primary characters as they're what's needed to get the exposition and reflection across, everyone else, not necessary but nice to be there as it shows there is a world out there and not just them... but this story, its about these four people...

and the simple plot? GIANT ROBOTS FIGHTING GIANT MONSTERS!! what the hell else does there need to be? oh yea, saving the world, that's kinda important, lets do that too... kay? wait, we're doing it in a rather sensible manner using in-verse techno-shenanigans that i don't need to hear someone talking for 10 fucking minutes to explain, 'big bomb, blow up tunnel, no more monsters' WOO~ excuse to fight giant monsters with giant mechs established... happy...

as for the nerd-isms... they weren't over played, overly obvious, and fit right where they needed to be... i'm very very happy, this is one of those rare movies where cliches are not only a very good thing, but done so damn right, and not just western cliches but eastern ones as well, its a good culmination of gamer and otaku type nerds and done so damn well...

i can't remember the last time i saw a movie and was straight happy from beginning to end honestly in this perfectly content, you've covered all my nerd-isms in a good, concise, and not overly stupid way... i think its a great damn movie... not one bit of it disappointed me...

and seriously, am i the only person that picked up the Aliens reference? seriously? and what's with the whole EVA comparing? no, just NO! when watching this i didn't get a single inkling to EVA... EVA belongs in the deep dark corner of great because they're evil/fucked things like Berserk and Genocyber... this, Pacific Rim has NOTHING to do with that and i actually love it for that, which is a rare, rare thing indeed... happy endings for everyone for fucking once!! *spreads around flowers and sunshines*

I had a whopping crowd of 6 people in theatre...

I'm feeling a bit meh about the film, though I would give it 7/10. I appreciated that this sort of film exists and they actually addressed backstory and world building. I just wanted something, anything else interesting to happen in this movie, it could have completely elevated this film.

I felt that many ideas were brushed on but never were followed through, like Mako's history and getting over her struggles. Or us seeing more detail in Raleigh recovery. There could have been more detail to the ultimate effects of melding with the Kaiju, aside from being taxing and giving nosebleeds. Or at the very least showing what it takes to maintain such a large Resistance, since big walls are the future. It is a 2 hour movie with very fun and pretty action chunks with bland watery soup drama. I know the premise and I understand it.

The one thing that annoys me most is that I have grown up with these tv shows and films throughout my entire life and I wish that I wish that I was feeling as ecstatic as everyone else. I feel bad for wanting more.

to anyone who takes posts opinions to the negative as a reason to avoid this movie in cinemas.... i will point out vocal minority seems heavily in effect.
84% of the poll here has a vote for it being great. 'Potato' has more votes than those saying it is bad/just ok.

That said, it is true I wished that the other robots got more than they did, getting beaten straight up seemed to me to perhaps have been a budget constraint(i mean, must be expensive for all those special effects, so cutting it back down to two must have saved some money i guess? visually it was superb either way, so it was either budget or they just needed an excuse to deploy the main two/wanted to avoid the '4 man robot squad vs monsters').
