Since I've graduated from high school and entered college, I've had a chance every now and again to look back on my childhood, specifically my experiences with my Mom...and what I see disturbs me.
Now, this isn't a rant against the older generations or simple, post-pubescent rebellion or gainsaying against my parents, I love both my parents. But looking back, Mom had (and has, I've confirmed it on my visits back) some serious issues.
First, She's a sexist: Since we've had the internet/computers, there have been content filters and time restrictions on it for my younger brother and I (Against porn, violence, drugs, etc.). Now, I wouldn't take issue with that...except that my sister (who is younger than both I and my brother), does not, and has never had any filtering or any time restrictions of any kind, and when I raised this point, her response was a flat "Girls don't need to be watched." Furthermore, my brother and I occasionally (as in, when we get hurt or when something unbelievably bad has happened) curse (And I mean the top three of the seven), and my Mom never so much as bats an eyelash, yet recently (My sister was 13 at the time), my sister used the word "crap" when she lost a hand in a family poker game. My mother's response was to immediately glare at her and say "Do not use that word, it's inappropriate!" When my sister (along with my brother and I backing her up) pointed out that my brother had used the same word, in the same context, not five minutes ago, she responded "A young lady does not use that kind of language." I could go on, but there's a bigger problem.
She's a political sheep: Not much of an explanation needed here. She simply doesn't question her party's (Democrat) platform or decisions, doesn't watch the interviews or debates during campaigns, or any of the arguments from the opposition (though, always manages to find time to watch the Democratic Party's speeches), and, worst of all, uses the "select by party" option on her ballots (She says this with PRIDE).
Finally, She is not open to debate/argument, on anything: Every single time I've gotten into an argument with her, it either ends with A. Me admitting my fault (When it's true, I never back down when I'm in the right and she cant prove otherwise) B. Her dismissively saying "You're a kid, you don't know anything" (She did this to me about a month ago in an argument over my choice to not have children) or C. Her simply glaring at me, walking away into another room and locking the door behind her.
*Sigh* Now the discussion question: Do one or both of your parents (or legal guardians) have serious or severe issues? If so, what?
