Do you buy something (game, movie, book etc) upon release date so you can enjoy it early or do you wait until the prices have fallen?

In my opinion if i was that excited about it full retail price is alright.

No more pre-orders for me, never again. I don't mind paying full (or near full) price for a game once I have established it is not, in fact, a worthless pile of garbage.

It really does depend on the movie/game/book/whatever.

I went to see The Dark Knight opening night. I got Mass Effect a good long while after it came out. It's really just how much I want it.

Movies I'll generally see on opening night, books will wait until I have nothing else to do, and any other form of media I'll just steal.

If it's a new gadget of some sort, I wait for a few months for the price to go down or for their to be an updated, less-likely-to-crash version released.

Books, I wait until it's out in paperback at Half-Price Bookstores.
Movies, sometimes I wait for the dvd, but if I have to see it in the theater, I ususally go opening night.
DVD's, I wait for them to be on sale.
Games, depends on the game. Some I'll buy as soon as possible, but I usually wait until the price hits about $30.

Movies and online games are the only things that make sense to buy first. Both have that exciting experience of discovery you get to share with everyone else. I suppose games that you really look forward to fall in that category too, but I can usually hold off. Otherwise, why not wait?

Depends. Movies are often much cheaper the first week they come out (at least at Wal-Mart.) The same with hard-bound books if they make the bestseller lists (again, at least at Books-A-Million.) I'll pick up either initially if I'm interested, but some (most) books aren't worth full hardback price to me, and some I'll only pick up mail order or at the used book store. And some movies aren't worth picking up until they hit the $5 or $10 bins.

Games on the other hand I never pre-order (they might suck) and almost never pick up at full price unless it's something I've been waiting on (Half Life 2, Doom 3, F.E.A.R.) and then I don't mind paying full price to support my preferred style and quality. Otherwise I'll pick them up for $10 to $30 depending on how fast they drop, what I've got stacked up waiting to be played, and how much I want that particular game.

Waiting for a prostitute to drop in price, though - that's just wrong on so many levels.

yeah cause by then she's all bruised up and such

as for me it depends on the movie and the game, there are ones like the darkness that i kinda wanted but wouldn't pay full price for others i do pay full price. as for preorder, it really depends on what the goodie they are offering for preorder or if it's going to be hard to get once it comes out

Spore is going to be the first game I buy on opening day.

I only bought Half-Life 2 Episode 2 about 3 weeks ago.

How much money do I have and are there any good benifits for pre-ordering the game. Also, how much do I want it? I pre-ordered fable2 only because of the way I just got the pub games for it and already probably have enough money to buy a small shop ingame. Or atleast I'll be able to buy a half-decent weapon.

It takes a fair chunk of time for a good game to dip below $60. I pre-order "sure things" like Halo 3 or Gears 2, and if I see something good, I'll take it then and there. I figure the longer I own it, the more fun I'll have.

It depends, If I deem it worthy to buy instantly, I pre-order it and buy it on the release date.
If I'm not quite sure, but still want to have played the game, I wait until the price drops and pick it up later.
