I've been a console gamer my entire life with the exception of a few "little kid's" games on the PC when....... well, I was a little kid. Anyway I've been thinking of trying some PC games for a while now, but I don't really know what's out there.

So, my question is if the Escapists have any PC game suggestions.

I should probably say I'm a big fan of FPS's, and shooters in general, but I'm always willing to try something new.

Also, should I get the games at a store or on that Steam network I've heard about.

Steam is cheap, but I prefer store bought ones because I like hard copies of my games.

Starcraft and Warcraft 3 are great RTS's, and I found them fairly easy to get into.

I prefer hard copies of games. Steam is ok, but I have this fear that something could happen to one or all of their servers and they would somehow lose my informaiton and/or games. It may be a little irrational, but I have a thing about actually being able to hold on to my purchases.

the first Ghost Recon is an FPS, but I found it surprisingly stealthy, as 1 shot = wounded, 2 shots = dead

I buy stuff from stores, usually, or I order it off the internet (not like steam, I have it sent to my house, not direct download)

But thats mainly cause I use a Mac and Steam isn't Mac compatible :(

Steam and the Valve Complete Pack.

$100 gets you all of Half Life, All of Team Fortress, All of Counter Strike, All of Day of defeat, Left 4 Dead, Portal and Ricochet. All up it comes to 22 games.

I prefer ~Steam as (so far) it's proved a lot more reliable than store bought games. Granted you can't sell on second hand copies, but with new PC games you can't do that anyway and it side steps most of the DRM/install limit bollcks without having to resort to Bit Torrent (hello EA).

If you like FPS I recommend BF2 wholeheartedly as well, it's very good and just predates utterbullshit DRM. Avoid 2142 like the plague, it's full of utter bullshit DRM and is largely deserted online now, certainly compared to BF2/1942.

Thrift through second hand stores for the classics, buy bigger games on Steam. Maximum benefits.

Also, I recommend Diablo 2 and Call Of Duty 2. Go get 'em.

As you're an FPS fan, I would go for Team Fortress 2. It's really fun multiplayer action.

On the single player side, FEAR is halfway decent, DOOM3 is teribad, but funny to play because of horrible design and monster predictability (good fun if you're playing with a roomie). I'm given to understand Bioshock is on the PC now as well? Bioshock is good, if you haven't played it on console.

In other genres, the Diablo and Warcraft games are fun, and if you want to try RPG's, I would eyeball both KOTOR games. If you want a long, heavier RPG with a ridiculously good story, try the Baldur's Gate games. If you're new to RPG's though, I would play some lighter, less complicated ones before diving balls deep into BG, like KOTOR, Morrowind, Dungeon Siege, or the like.

I'm a thinky-bits kind of person, so I enjoy a good puzzle. Having said that, check out the Myst series. These are games that you play when you want to relax, and spend a few hour exploring beautiful environments and using your noggin to solve interesting puzzles and storyline bits. Excellent games, but definitely require patience.

Well, I have here next to me the games Outlive, Full Throttle, the Blitzkreig Anthology, Deus Ex, and NOLF.

And by God sir you must play Deus Ex. You are truly missing out if you don't.

I used to buy them from the shop. But shops seem to be stocking more and more console games and the choice of PC games is becoming limited, So i've slowly been turning to Steam for my gaming needs

I recommend portal. Well, since you are already recommended the orange box thats a give.

I really like Steam. It ensures you are up-to-date when you log in and run the game, and the software can connect you with friends while you are playing in just about any game (Steam or Non-Steam). Also its a good way to keep your games collection. You dont need to clutter your desktop.

Valve games your going to need to use Steam anyway, so get those there. Anything else, whatever is cheapest.

Orange Box is a good FPS start though.

If you can stand dated graphics/games then Dues Ex and Nolf are good single player FPSs (Very good actually, just dated)
