If Fallout 3 and Steam had Linux support, I would NEVER support any Microsoft or Apple product. i have reasons for preferring Linux (specifically, Ubuntu) over both of them beyond this, but the majority of my reasoning is thus:
[ul]
[li]Microsoft has (or had; Mozilla, OpenOffice and others have put a serious dent in this) a powerful monopoly on software for their platform, which I cannot in good conscience support. I don't know if anyone even remembers this, but there was a huge brouhaha over the packaging of Internet Explorer with Windows 98. The creators of Netscape argued (rightfully) that this gave Windows an unfair advantage in the browser market, given that they already had something along the lines of a 90% monopoly on operating systems. This happened nearly a decade ago and was NEVER FIXED. Netscape went broke, and its source code was salvaged into the open-source powerhouse Mozilla Firefox.[/li]
[li]Apple has directly opposed the GNU General Public License, going so far as to sue the Free Software Foundation for "loss of revenue." Looking at the figures, both Apple and Microsoft make damn near a trillion dollars a year. WHAT LOSS OF REVENUE.[/li]
[/ul]
Damn I hate corporations.

Anyway, I don't want to start a backdraft, so I'm gonna tie it up here, before I start insulting people.

Windows, because wine (linux directx) costs money and piracy of linux applications is pure evil. Even though it treats the end user like a complete retard, most (or all, if you're especially determined) of the hand-holding can be disabled to increase performance.
Sir, if someone is trying to get you to pay them for WINE, you are being ripped off. If I may ask, which flavor did you try? I know for a fact that Ubuntu has the packages for free download on their site.

Well, seeing as I don't have an artistic bone in my body and that Linux is mind-boggling to me...

...and I'm a PC gamer, so it's a PC with Windows 7 for me. Plus I know how to fix a Windows PC if it goes wrong. It's taken me 13 years to gather all that knowledge so I don't intend to try learning something else....

This thread interests me. My wife and I are considering getting a new laptop and I've been thinking hard about a Mac. My desktop is a PC and I do like to game occasionally, but I've just heard good things about the Macs.

Mac user - professional purposes. I'd love a capable gaming PC (last PC I bought was nine years ago) but I'm also a great fan of my Macbook Pro. Been considering bootcamping Windows 7 to it, though. Mind you, now that Steam is on the way to Mac, things may start looking up.
Still, I think I'll be a Mac user from here, on out. They're excellent.

In the meantime, I make do with my X360 and PS3 for all my gaming needs.

Eh, I'm a windows man with my hand built PC, I just enjoy the customization you get with a PC, where as a mac you're stuck with what you got because everything is so integrated. This might be different with that PC mac they got now, but I don't really care enough to look into it. As for Linux, I just feel so unsafe with a public domain GUI.

Depends.

For my programming, gaming, and general use, I prefer a PC. I'm one of those crazy people that *likes* Windows.

But, for more artistic ventures (graphic design, music stuff, film-editing (more my husband than me), I prefer a Mac.

I used to be a hardcore PC gamer when I was younger.

I completed Half Life countless times when I was six years old or so. (It had just come out)

Then suddenly all my friends were buying Playstation's.

Dad of course already had that, an N64, a Dreamcast, and was considering the upcoming PS2.

So I asked my Dad to take me out to buy some cheap games.

That was the day my PC was forgotten.

Sure, PC gaming is great, but there's something about sitting with your friends on a couch and gaming your brains out that appeals to me. Regardless, I now own all the next gen systems and I'll continue to console game until the gaming well dries up.

Which is seeming more and more likely lately...

Due to a friend of mine I'm currently using Linux (Ubuntu, to be specific). While I haven't seen enough of it to determine how it compares (though I like the instant compatibility and packed-in programs), so far I very much like it, and the lack of games is on its way to being fixed [http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=ODIwNQ].
Thank you, thank you, thank you! That link just made me a very happy person! Hurry up, Valve, and don't give up on it!

Dual boot, with Windows and Linux.

Windows Vista and Suse Linux to be accurate.
Though I'd love to get me a Mac.

That was approximately my reaction when I first learned of it, add a few goat sacrifices to Valve's programmers.

On a related note, do you think Linux compatibility will be mainstream because of this? If so, me and said friend who converted me will be very happy.

I'm not sure if it will be completely mainstream, but it will be a big step in the right direction. We just have to support it by installing the Steam client and buying a lot of games, and encouraging our fellow Linux users to do the same. If they can make a Mac port of a lot of popular games, it shouldn't be too much of a stretch to make a Linux port for at least the more popular distributions. I can see where offering up the source code for distros like Gentoo could be a problem, though.

About the porting, supposedly Ubuntu and Mac OS have some similarity that would make porting easy. I don't know the details, however.

And yes, I'll buy a lot of games to support them. I made an oath to buy $100 worth of Steam games when the Linux client is released, including Sam & Max Season 3 (why yes, I like adventure games).

Oh, and enjoy [http://www.phoronix.com/forums/showthread.php?t=23696&page=1].
