Hello fellow games enthusiasts

Decisions decisions! As I'm sure you all have, I've been watching the E3 with great enjoyment and anticipation. But what to do about the next generation?

A little about myself, I've been playing games since I was but a wee nipper. I still have and regularly use my Sega mega drive, Nintendo 64, playstation 2 (with a healthy psone library too) in addition to having a Wii and PS3 from this generation.

Now as much as I am looking forward to the new games coming up, I can't say the same for the new consoles. PS4 looks.... Ok... but all is social interaction and other bells and whistles really don't float my boat. (Someone else can play my games for me.... Seriously? Since when have we been so afraid of challenge?) So I am considering building a gaming PC of similar if not better specs than the PS4 (I've estimated it will cost about £700 for the specs I want) and finding a way to link either my PS3 pads to it or a PS4 pad if possible.

My thinking is as thus;

1. I will be able to play may favourite games from this generation on it as well as next gen if I want, but this time with mods, improved graphics etc

2. All the upcoming games Im interested most in (Assasins creed 4, Dark souls 2 (LOVED dark souls 1), watchdogs, etc) are coming out for PC as well as console, and from what I hear will have superior graphics, sound etc to the console ports even pre-modding.

3. As time goes on and the next next gen comes up, I can simply upgrade the specs instead of buying a whole new console (greater short term investment, but savings over the long term)

However;

1. I've had less then stellar experiences with PC gaming in the past, especially as the computer got older (granted, that was on a laptop with my university degree course and program's on it too).

2. As later games are released, the specs will need to be improved to accommodate them (so I might have to upgrade often, whereas console owners wouldn't as the game would be adapted to work best on their console)

3. I will of course miss out on future exclusives that MIGHT turn out rather good (FFXV, God of War)

What do we think? Any PC gamers think they can give advice? Any console owners thinking along the same lines? I honestly think I need a bit of input from the gaming community (especially those who are lucky enough to have both console and PC) before I can start investing the kind of money for the next gen

Thanks

Pheo

P.S I know I havnt mentioned the XboxONE, but the whole used game fiasco has put me right off them.

I say PC, They can keep up with the console market and keep away from crappy DRM and the used game shite (I know the ps4 is doing that as well). In my opinion I would rather spend some money on upgrading my current pc and avoid paying a ridiculous amount of money for a new console.

As a die hard pc gamer I have some advice for the (possible) neophytes
1) Don't expect that everything gets modded, or that all mods necessarily improve the gaming experience.
2) IMO if you build a decent system, you won't have to upgrade for 3 years, depending on what graphics settings you are content with of course.
3) I think that in the long term, PCs are a greater investment, with lower game prices and Steam.
That's all for now :p

From my experience of owning both PC and consoles, PC isn't as special as it is made out to be on this website. Slightly fancier graphics really don't add anything to the experience of most games. And mod support isn't always that great (only really a select few games have extensive mod support). Sure the games are often cheap, but frankly most of em are shit and the good ones are usually also on consoles (Except for strategy games). My PC these days is pretty much just an emulator/strategy game box.

The main draw of PC gaming I find is the ability to play at 1080p and 60fps which will be standard for next gen anyway. Also Playstation exclusives these days are too good to miss. Personally I'm getting the PS4 and holding off upgrading my PC for a while.

good advice guys, thanks

if I was to build a gaming PC, assuming I can get the OS for free and intend on using my hdtv as a monitor, would 700 be enough to have a PC that will match, if not beat, next gen consoles?

Yeah, assuming that you will pick the parts yourself and not buy a crappy pre made one.
You said you intend on using the HDTV, does that mean you will be playing from the couch? If yes then it's better to pick a console imho, wrong posture and all.

I've gt a really comfrey chair and was planning on playing primarily with a Ps3 or Xbox pad. For games which require mouse and keyboard I was going to set up a small table. Should work?

As long as you're not leaning all the time or anything yes but I think that if you're mainly interested in console games there's really not a whole lot of sense in getting a pc if all you're going to do is playing console ports. In other words if you are just wanting a console replacement then why don't you just get a proper console, after all there is really no telling how many next gen console games are going to be ported anyway. That's just my opinion.

Thank you!

The way I see it, for a person on a tight budget, PS4 would be better. To match specs that would allow you to play seamlessly on a PC, it gets pretty expensive. Although, there is the fact that consoles are always changing whereas PC can handle plentiful games and don't have to worry about backwards compatibility.

Personally, I'll have a PS4 (eventually) as my main gaming device but still gonna need my PC for indie games and MMOs. As far as AAA-titles go, I feel more comfortable and prefer a PS4. I can also tell what my friends are playing and join up with them. The only problem I would have had is if some of the multiplayer games coming out for PS4 didn't have cross-platform compatibility (seeing as my friends are all over the place) but these games -coughcough FF14 coughcough- are cross-platform so it's all good.
