I am currently running a Geforce 780 ti. the Cost of which has gone down by almost $300 since I bought a few short months ago. It's still running like a champ.

I was wondering for the future should I get a second 780 ti and run them in SLI or get a GTX 980 which has new lighting and anti anti-alaising techniques as well as a lower power draw which is nice since my rig can raise the room temp by 5 degrees.

SLI would give you more raw performance than getting a GTX 980, but has the drawback of needing more power, and generating more heat. Make sure you have at minimum a good quality 750 Watt power supply if you choose to go with SLI. Not all games support SLI, so if you do run into games that have issues with SLI, you're stuck running in a single card configuration. DSR is now available on the GTX 780Ti with the latest drivers, so that's no longer a Maxwell exclusive feature.

The GTX 980 really isn't that much of a step up over the 780Ti, their performance is very close, so getting a 980 is kind of pointless for you unless you feel you really need more power efficiency and less heat generated. Even getting another 780Ti for SLI is probably overkill unless you want to attempt gaming at 4k resolution.
